The Harker School, a private TK-12 school located in San Jose, CA, seeks qualified applicants for the position of Maintenance Assistant. This is an hourly, full-time, benefited position starting at $25.00/hour. The hours of work will be 7:30am—4pm, Monday through Friday.
Expected Hourly Range: $25.00 - $29.00
Position Summary
Supports day-to-day Maintenance and Custodial activities on campus.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Communicate in effective verbal English.
- Hear individuals, groups, telephone and intercom communications, public address announcements, emergency signals, etc.
- See and read safety notices.
- Lift and carry items up to 50 lbs to a 4 ft height and up to 25 ft.
- Push and pull 250 lbs up to 100 feet on platform type cargo dollie.
- Climb on ladders, scaffolds and roofs.
- Possess effective eye-hand and foot-hand-eye coordination.
- Tolerate aerobic activities of job including:
- Constant standing, walking, and grasping
- Frequent crouching, turning/twisting, and bending
- Occasional sitting, kneeling, driving, climbing, reaching, handling, fingering and throwing
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Support campus Facility Manager in day-to-day activities
- Respond to maintenance request needs (daily)
- Perform minor building, grounds and mechanical repairs or upgrades (daily)
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of Maintenance Shop and equipment (daily)
- Run shop errands (as needed)
- Assist with new equipment installations or equipment repairs (as needed)
- Unlock and disarm campus buildings (as needed)
- Assist supervisor with routine pool maintenance (daily) [Saratoga & Bucknall campuses]
- Assist department with seasonal activities and special projects (as needed)
- Perform all mechanical and equipment repairs under accepted industry standards or seek help from supervisory personnel (ongoing)
2. Coordinate all day-shift special event set-up requests

- Oversee coordination of event setups and strikes (daily)
- Coordinate assistance from additional staff when needed (daily)
3. Provide groundskeeping and custodial assistance
- Respond to custodial emergencies (as needed)
- Assist with athletic field prep (as needed)
- Clean & restock bathrooms (as needed)
- Vacuum or sweep/mop classrooms and offices (as needed)
- Replace overhead fluorescent tubes (as needed)
- Clean glass doors and windows (as needed)
- Empty outside trash containers (as directed)
- Empty and maintain cleanliness of all recycling containers (as directed)
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned. Ensures that work area is clean, secure and well maintained.
Knowledge, Skill & Ability Requirements
- 6 months experience in building maintenance or related field
- Knowledgeable in safe use of small hand and power tools
- Willingness to take on new and varied tasks
- Able to complete specific tasks with moderate supervision
Working Conditions
No hazardous or significantly unpleasant conditions exist provided safe work practices are followed as prescribed in the Facilities Departments Health and Safety Guidelines. For this position, special attention in the areas of safe lifting techniques, ladder safety, hand and power tool safety, and proper utilization of Personal Protective Equipment are important elements of the employees work practices in safeguarding himself against injury.
