HJF is seeking a Scientist III to lead the development and execution of research projects. Supervises projects and investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.
This position will be in support of the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) located in Frederick, MD at Fort Detrick. This position will support research programs focused on the development of medical countermeasures (therapeutics and vaccines) for high containment viruses of interest to the Department of Defense and Health and Human Services. Scientists will conduct laboratory studies at all biosafety levels (BSL-2-4) aimed at understanding virus-host interactions, the efficacy of novel vaccines and therapeutics, and the mechanism behind protective efficacy of novel vaccines and therapeutics.

- Demonstrates cross-disciplinary knowledge, leadership, and communication. Trains and supervises technical staff and other scientists. Collaborates with other technical and professional staff.
- Plans, executes, and oversees laboratory research. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs and implements experimental protocols.
- Collects, processes, and interprets experimental data. Assess strengths and weaknesses of work.
- Monitors scientific literature. Prepares written reports and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and prepares patent applications.
- Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications.
- Processes and interprets experimental data.
- Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
- Enrollment in USAMRIID’s Personnel Reliability Program (PRP), a pre-requisite for access to and working in BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratories.
- Meet and maintain eligibility requirements for USAMRIID's BRPR, CPRP, and /or CSPRP, including background check and drug screening.
- May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.
- Doctoral Degree required.
- Minimum of 8-10 years experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
- Ability to work independently and supervise others.
- US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance and BRPR, CPRP, and/or CSPRP, including background check and drug screening.
Physical Capabilities
- Maintain sufficient health to meet enrollment criteria and maintain eligibility in USAMRIID’s Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP), Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (CPRP) and/or Controlled Substances Personnel Reliability Program (CSPRP).
- Current on routine adult immunizations or proof of active immunity against HBV, MMR, Influenza, COVID-19, Tdap. Employees working directly with patients or research participants must receive a negative TB test.
- Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
- This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Compensation
- The annual salary range for this position is $100,500 - $155,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
