HJF is seeking a Social Worker II (Palliative Care) to support the John P. Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP) of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). This position is located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. U.S. citizenship required.


The Social Worker II (Palliative Care) will be responsible for clients with professional therapy assistance involving crisis intervention, individual short-term, martial, group and individual long-term therapy.


The John P. Murtha Cancer Center Research Program at Walter Reed Bethesda is a modern, patient-centric, tri-service military healthcare facility. Its comprehensive core of military and civilian oncologists and other cancer- trained clinicians and researchers provide multidisciplinary cancer-care delivery and patient-family support services. Our Cancer Center, the only DoD Cancer Center of Excellence within the Military Health System, offers its patients access to cutting-edge cancer diagnostic and treatment technologies. The incumbent will work as a Research Nurse for MCCRP cancer patients in the following areas: Surgical Oncology, Pulmonary Oncology, and Urologic Oncology.


The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.

Responsibilities:
  • Assists with planning, developing, implementing, coordinating and evaluating palliative care services as a part of the Palliative Care Program’s growth and development.
  • Provides counseling & support to patients, families, and hospital staff. Assists with care coordination and discharge planning. Plans, coordinates, and implements educational and outreach services to patients, families, hospital staff, and the military community. Monitors and reports outcomes of palliative care and hospice referrals and consultations in conjunction with the Palliative Care Program. Assists the palliative care team and/or directly facilitates patient-family meetings for goal setting and care planning. Establishes and coordinates support groups.
  • Serves as a mentor and trainer to assist hospital staff with developing primary palliative care skills (e.g. case managers, social workers, nurses, residents & interns). Initiates and participates in palliative care quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provides development and oversight of metrics to demonstrate program impact and provides regular review of operational metrics and production of summaries for palliative care director’s review.
  • Provide liaison function between the palliative care team and community hospice, home care agencies, long-term care facilities and other community services as needed. Provides clinical support and address the psychological needs of patients and families throughout the hospital in response to consultation with the palliative care program.
  • Performs and documents psychosocial assessments, care plans, and palliative care screenings.
  • Assists in designing, developing, and executing research in child and adult Palliative care.
  • Conducts analysis and generates research reports.
  • Assists in designing, developing, and executing research in child and adult Palliative Care.
  • Reviews proposals, protocols, and manuscripts on palliative care.
  • Manages and executes human use compliance requirements.
  • Interpretation and application of data analyses. Incorporates new, more complex analytic techniques to examine the data, and publishes results to help inform and advance field.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience
  • Master's Degree required in Social Work, Psychology, Public Health required
  • Minimum of 6-8 years experience required

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Substantial knowledge of appropriate scientific areas.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret data; experience writing manuscripts for publication in professional journals or books.
  • Writing and presenting papers at professional meetings and conferences.
  • The ability to obtain and/or maintain a T3 Secret Clearance with CAC.
Required Licenses, Certifications or Registrations
  • Active certification in hospice and palliative care within 1 year of employment required.
Work Environment
  • This position will take place in both a clinical and office setting.
Compensation
  • The annual salary range for this position is $88,600-$120,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
