1. Spiritual Leadership and Values

  • Promote Catholic Values: Integrating Catholic teachings into the athletic program. The coach should encourage faith-based principles such as sportsmanship, respect, integrity, teamwork, and compassion.
  • Mentorship: Being a role model for student-athletes, helping them grow not just athletically but also personally and spiritually.
  • Prayer and Reflection: Incorporating prayer before or after practices and matches, if appropriate, and fostering an environment where faith is acknowledged in the context of competition and teamwork.

2. Athletic and Coaching Expertise

  • Develop a Competitive Program: Create a strategy for team development, from teaching fundamentals to preparing for competition at different levels (e.g., local league, regionals, state).
  • Skill Development: Provide instruction in both singles and doubles strategies, tennis techniques, and match preparation.
  • Game Preparation: Organize and execute practices, ensuring they are structured, productive, and challenging for athletes of varying skill levels.
  • In-Season and Off-Season Training: Ensure athletes maintain their fitness and skills year-round, offering guidance on conditioning and strength-building outside the regular season.

3. Team Building and Management

  • Foster Teamwork and Cohesion: Encourage a positive, inclusive team environment where players feel supported and respected, promoting mutual respect and unity.
  • Effective Communication: Maintain clear, respectful communication with athletes, parents, and school administration. Ensuring players and families are well-informed of practice schedules, matches, and team goals.
  • Individual Attention: Recognize the unique needs and strengths of each athlete, offering individual coaching when necessary to help them improve and thrive.

4. Collaboration with School Administration and Parents

  • Coordinate with the Athletic Director: Work in tandem with the athletic director to align the tennis program with school goals, policies, and Catholic teachings.
  • Manage Schedules and Logistics: Organize practices, matches, transportation, and any other logistical aspects related to the team. Also, ensure compliance with any specific school rules regarding travel and participation.
  • Engage Parents and Community: Maintain a strong connection with parents and encourage their involvement in supporting the team. This could include organizing fundraisers, attending matches, and being involved in team events.

5. Character Development and Discipline

  • Promote Good Sportsmanship: Uphold the standards of fair play, honesty, and respect for opponents, referees, and teammates.
  • Disciplinary Role: Enforce team rules and school expectations. Address any behavioral issues promptly and in alignment with the school’s policies, ensuring the spiritual, academic, and athletic development of the athletes.
  • Encourage Academic Excellence: Support players in balancing their academics and athletics, and encourage them to prioritize their education.

6. Safety and Welfare

  • Ensure Athlete Safety: Take steps to ensure player safety during practices and competitions, including proper warm-ups, injury prevention, and adhering to all health and safety guidelines.
  • Monitor Mental and Emotional Well-being: Recognize when athletes may need additional support, either with team dynamics, personal issues, or mental health concerns, and direct them to appropriate resources.

7. Professionalism

  • Lead by Example: Exhibit professionalism in all interactions, both on and off the court, to set a positive example for the student-athletes and the broader school community.
  • Continuous Learning: Stay updated with coaching techniques, tennis trends, and professional development opportunities to improve as a coach.

The head coach should be someone who deeply understands and lives out the values of the Catholic faith while fostering a culture of excellence in tennis. Balancing competitive success with spiritual growth and character development is essential in this role.

All home matches are played at Atkins Tennis Center at the University of Illinois.
