The Opportunity

The Historic Requa Inn seeks an innkeeper to live on site in our historic Inn, and to host guests 4 days a week. Our ideal candidate is a dynamic, personable, self-directed individual (or couple) with exceptional customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills, who loves the outdoors, delicious food, and great conversation. This 2023 position is open August 1, 2023-January 5th. The 2024 season will begin February 10th.

The Property

The Historic Requa Inn is located in the heart of pristine old growth redwood forests, on the banks of the Klamath River and less than one mile to the Pacific ocean. We are in the center of a World Heritage Biodiversity Site. Owned by Yurok Tribal members, the Historic Requa Inn was built in 1914 and is located on the Yurok reservation. We are located right off of Highway 101 and a 6-7 hour drive to Portland, Oregon to the north and San Francisco to the south.

The Historic Requa Inn features 14 bedrooms and our property includes a backyard hot tub, a firepit and two acres to the Klamath River. Our river frontage includes a gazebo, picnic tables and fire pit on a flat grassy yard. Each room has its own bathroom and non offer televisions. Our offerings also include the Requa House, a 3 bed/2 bath home and The Cottage, just up the hill.

The Historic Requa Inn provides a daily breakfast, and organic coffee, tea and water service all day, year ‘round. In the summers, our organic farming neighbors operate the restaurant on-site and offer daily cooked-to-order breakfast and farm to fork dinner a few nights a week. Our dining room can accommodate up to 50 people and we host groups including public officials, celebrities and non-profit retreats. The Historic Requa Inn is a magical place to relax and rejuvenate.

Responsibilities

The Historic Requa Inn strives to create a personalized approach to service, with attention to even the smallest details. We strive to provide our guests with an exceptional and memorable experience in a natural and peaceful environment – which is only made possible by the talent and commitment of our incredible staff.

The Innkeeper is responsible for guest services and hosting Inn visitors from across the globe to have a relaxing, rejuvenating experience. This includes morning and evening front-desk duties for guest check ins and check outs; gift shop inventory, stocking and sales; selling and serving beverages; and providing local recreation advice and guidance. Your day will include baking chocolate chip cookies, setting out port each evening, and arranging fresh flowers. The Innkeeper manages the on-line reservation system, answers phone calls and emails, and supports the dining room team with breakfast and dinner reservations. The Innkeeper also keeps local events and attractions information current. There are light housekeeping duties, including staging guest rooms, emptying public trash bins, and ensuring the public spaces are tidy. You’ll get to water the flower pots, check the hot tub, monitor the water tank, and feed the cats who have adopted us. In the winter, the Innkeeper is responsible to set up and clean up the grab and go breakfast.

The Innkeeper is also a communication channel between the restaurant, housekeeping staff, vendors, guests and the owners. Our ideal candidate is a proactive, clear and positive communicator and problem solver.

A daily schedule is a split shift of 7:30-11:00am and 3:30-8:00pm, minimum. The Innkeeper is required to be on site nightly from 9:00pm-8:00am to respond to any emergencies, even on the three days a week without front desk duties.

A Few Caveats

Requa is a very rural community: Located in the heart of the Redwood National Park, this is a very rural and isolated community. The nearest grocery store is a windy 20 miles away. If you need city activities to be happy- we’re not the place for you. In addition, there may be times when you’re the only staff on site, so innkeeper duties can sometimes include preventing bears from eating from trash bins, clearing fallen branches from the road after a storm, starting a generator in a storm, or looking after feral cats.

Power outages: We have strong coastal storms that can cause power outages or gaps in internet service. We do have a generator that will provide heat to parts of the building, but we can not guarantee all rooms will have hot water or electricity in case of a power outage. Even in the case of a power outage, our kitchen and fireplace are still operational.

Cell Service: Verizon provides great cell service at Requa, but most other carriers are not reliable at the Inn.

Wifi: The Requa Inn has the best internet we can buy in our remote area, which is not as strong as most urban locations.

A Tribal Family Owned business: The Historic Requa Inn is a family owned business. Our people have lived at the village of Requa since the beginning of time and our Grandma, Aunties and Uncles live just up the hill. We feel very honored to be the first Tribal members to own the Inn in its 100 year history, especially since the Inn is located on the Yurok reservation. We seek an innkeeper who holds our shared family values including: a deep commitment to environmental stewardship, a love of humanity, equity and inclusion. Bonus if you have experience working/living in Indigenous community or the Klamath River basin.

For Fun

The Historic Requa Inn is located on the banks of the Klamath River and less than one mile to the Pacific Ocean- all ideal spots for kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, beachcombing. World-class hiking trails through pristine old growth redwood forests in the Redwood National park are accessible within a few minute’s drive.
