What are the responsibilities and job description for the GRAPHIC DESIGN AND COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST position at The Hobby Center for Performing Arts?
OVERVIEW
The Hobby Center’s graphic designer is a visual storyteller who uses their creativity, technical skills, and design expertise to engage, inform, and inspire, while also creating materials that resonate with appropriate target audiences and achieve the Hobby Center’s mission and strategic goals.
This individual can take concepts and ideas and create visual representations, in both print and electronic media.
The ideal candidate will have expert knowledge of current design software and be skilled in every step of the design process, from concept to final deliverable. Proficiency in design software such as Photoshop, InDesign, and Adobe Creative Suite, along with a strong understanding of current design principles and trends, typography and color theory is required.
MAJOR FUNCTIONS

Create
- Digital and print assets including (but not limited to) print and digital ads, social and web graphics, posters, direct mail, invitations, flyers and brochures for all areas of the Hobby Center including Marketing, Development, Education and Special Events
- Short videos and motion graphics for social media and email
- Templates for email communications using ConstantContact email platform
Help shoot photos and videos for Hobby Center website, social media and email campaigns
- Collaborate with multiple teams across the Hobby Center as an in-house creative consultant; the graphic designer should be able to take written or spoken ideas and convert them into a design that aligns with brand or artist guidelines and effectively communicates the intended message, including driving ticket sales.
- Manage project deadlines and workflow from concepting to proofing to final deliverables. Work closely with the Marketing and Development Manager on production schedules to make sure all materials are proofed and approved.
- Communicate professionally with internal and external stakeholders throughout design, proofing and printing process. Accept and adapt to feedback in a timely manner.

Required Skills and Qualifications
- Excellent design software skills especially in InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Experience in video, motion graphic and photo editing software
- Experience in management of both digital and print production
- Strong portfolio of illustrations and other graphics
- Proven graphic design skills with 3-5 years of experience or Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields
- Previous experience in project management software is a plus

COMPENSATION
The Hobby Center offers a competitive compensation and benefits package including medical, dental, and vision insurance, a 403b savings plan with matching employer contributions, and paid time off. The anticipated hiring range for this position is $55,000-$65,000.
