JOB SUMMARY:
Designs, implements, and directs the infection programs for the Hospital and patient clinics. Infection control responsibilities include (but not limited to) surveillance, analysis, reporting activities as well as setting standards and evaluating compliance for practices that are associated with the prevention and control of health care associated infections.
Employee Health: Planning, implementing, evaluating, and analyzing employee health services to include immunizations, work-related exposures, illnesses and injuries.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:
- Develop, integrate, manage, and control the functional components of the infection control program. Update and seek approval from administration and the infection control committee annually.
- Plans, Implements, evaluates and analyzes employee health immunizations, work-related exposures, illnesses and injuries.
- Conducts surveillance and follow-up of employee exposures to communicable diseases and/or blood borne pathogens. Conducts follow up skin testing for all employee TB exposures. Provides concise data and tracking of all exposures.
- Plans, implements and conducts annual Flu Vaccine Program.
- Plans and implements other vaccine programs as directed by APIC, OSHA, CDC and other regulatory agencies, to include Tetanus and MMR.
- Organize and maintain a manual that reflects infection control and the infection control committee by serving on committees that facilitate integration of the infection control standards. Maintains summaries and written reports required for employee illness/injury reporting.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of current routine and emergency infection control measures practiced in the hospital and nursing home.
- Communicates directly and/or indirectly with medical and nursing education staff on issues relating to employee health.
- Communicates directly and/or indirectly with medical and nursing education staff on issues relating to educational needs of health care providers.
- Support and contribute to the quality improvement program by performing statistical analysis of nosocomial infections and trending other indicators that measure quality of care associated with infection control and employee health services.
- Performs surveillance activities and applies an epidemiological approach to problem solving.
- Provides formal and informal education programs to all personnel.
- Must be able to follow directions, both oral and written, and work cooperatively with other staff members.
- Plans, organizes, directs, and systematically monitors the programs that assess care delivery and supportive services prospectively and retrospectively in all areas of the hospital.
- Makes appropriate and timely recommendations that influence the standard of care and minimize risk of disease transmission.
- Guides, coordinates, educates, and persuades all departments to integrate infection control principles in the provision of cost-effective care.
- Analyzes and projects infection risks and potential results of those risks to and from the patients, employee, environment, and the community.
- Participates in and affects the decision-making process dealing with products standardization in order to ensure that items used support good technique and that any reusable items are bio-safe.
- Perform surveillance activities such as IC data collection, culture report, and environmental rounds.
- Prepares, evaluates, and reports all patient facility acquired infections, notifies state of notifiable communicable diseases by culture report surveillance, monitors staff infections, and manages all employee exposure incidents from BBP, TB, etc. Maintains all reports and store IC records in department in confidential manner.
- Reports all findings to IC Committee at least on quarterly basis and more frequently if indicated and to Medical Staff. Maintains all IC Committee meeting minutes and distributes them as indicated.
- Develops QI indicators for IC department and implements plans to improve quality of care for patients and residents along with providing safe environmental setting for health care workers. Provides IC QI reports to QI Coordinator and Committee in established QI reporting manner.
- Develops, implements, and monitors policies, procedures and standards of care provision that is epidemiologically sound.
- Establishes standards that meet the licensing and/or accrediting guidelines.
- Sets goals and prioritizes work efforts in a responsible manner.
- Participates in committee functions as an active member or consultant as necessary and/or as required by the regulatory agencies, profession services, or administration.
- Participates in activities associated with the public health department that would be beneficial to the hospital, and general public such as health fairs.
- Ensures that IC continuing education programs are provided to all staff.
- Participates in regularly scheduled programs such as new employee general orientation and annual updates.
- Provides updated information to all staff as regulations, practices, and equipment or as changes are made to keep hospital in compliant with current standards.
- Participates in nursing and medical education programs as requested or needed.
- Seeks opportunities for self-development to maintain professional currency and skills necessary to meet all job and program requirements.

Qualifications
EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- RN with current state licensure. BS degree desirable. Job experience in infection control/epidemiology guidelines and specific regulatory licensure mandates from state and federal agencies.
- Working knowledge and ability to demonstrate a comprehension of medical and nursing education and patient care management, microbiology, pathology, immunology, epidemiology, and medical statistics.
- Knowledge of pertinent regulatory, accrediting, and advisory body requirements including, but not limited to, local and state regulations, and recommendations of the CDC.
- Ability to interact effectively with all levels of health care personnel in these facilities and other health care facilities, public health services at the local, state, and national levels, and the CDC.
- Must be able to take a leadership role in cost-effective prevention of transmissible diseases.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to educate and respond to hospital, nursing home and external agency personnel.
- Basic computer skills.
- Must demonstrate a basic understanding of QI monitoring and utilization management activities.
