JOB SUMMARY:

Assists surgeon during operative and invasive procedures. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitor PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Cleans and sterilizes all surgical instruments. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Performs all job responsibilities in alignment with the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Performs other duties as required and completes all job functions as per departmental policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge in present areas of responsibility (i.e., self-education, attends ongoing educational programs).
  • Attends staff meetings and completes mandatory in-services and requirements and competency evaluations on time.
  • Wears protective clothing and equipment as appropriate.

GENERAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Additional languages preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal skills.
  • Basic Computer Skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • General environment: Works in a well-lighted, air-conditioned area, with moderate noise levels.
  • May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights.
  • May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids, or infectious organisms.
  • May be required to change from one task to another or different nature without loss of efficiency or composure.
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.
  • May be scheduled as needed including overtime.

PHYSICAL REQUIRMENTS & DEMANDS:

  • Have near normal hearing: Hear alarms/telephone/normal speaking voice.
  • Have near normal vision: Clarity of vision (both near and far), ability to distinguish colors.
  • Have good manual dexterity.
  • Have good eye-hand foot coordination.
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks/motion.
  • Continuously within shift (67-100%): Standing, Walking.
  • Frequently within shift (34-66%): Bending/Stooping, Pushing/Pulling, Lift/carry up to 20lbs, Lift/carry > 20 lbs. with assistance.
  • Occasionally within shift (1-33%): Sitting, Climbing, Twist at waist, Lift/Carry > 50 lbs. with assistance, Reaching above shoulder.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:

  • Accurately completes operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles); follows proper procedure in the event of incorrect count; reports all discrepancies to Circulating Nurse and surgeon and/or corrects immediately.
  • Carries out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Maintains a safe environment for patients, co-workers and self, per hospital policies and procedures.
  • Checks all equipment/instruments needed, prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
  • Protects patients sensitivities and right to privacy; closely observes patient with minimal disturbance.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Follows aseptic technique, when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Sets up, scrubs, and prepares procedures at least 15 minutes prior to scheduled time, unless otherwise directed by Circulating Nurse or Nurse Manager.
  • Performs services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of Circulating RN.
  • Always maintains an orderly and sterile instrument table for the purpose of efficiency; follows department standard set up.
  • Anticipates the needs of surgeon during intraoperative phase.
  • Cleans and prepares rooms between procedures and after the last case; restocks supplies when necessary and organizes effectively for end-of-case clean up.
  • Is fully responsible for the care of instruments/equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.
  • Follows written procedures for steam sterilization; knows responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
  • Consults with other staff members when in question or unfamiliar with equipment or procedure.
  • Regularly collaborates with other members of the nursing team in order to maintain equipment and supplies for surgical procedures.
  • Completes documentation within shift and meets current standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Establishes and maintains effective communication and good working relationship with co-workers for the patients benefit.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts and good judgment within the Operating Room Technicians scope of practice.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of assigned case and instruments and/or trays to be pulled for the procedure.
  • Interacts professionally with patient and family.
  • Provides patient with explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Notifies appropriate licensed personnel when patient complains of pain.
  • Adapts procedures to meet individual needs of neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients for treatment.
  • Prepares the room in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment for each individual surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrates competence in care of specimens and accurately handles specimens at all times.
  • Assists in positioning, prepping, and draping of patients for surgical procedures.

  • General Responsibilities
    • Reports for scheduled shift on time; prepared to assume duties.
    • Reports to work in proper uniform or attire. Adheres to dress code.
    • Clocks in on arrival and out upon leaving.
    • Follows policy for reporting in sick or absent 100% of the time.
    • Leaves for meal break on time and returns on time.
    • Varies work schedule of shift (working overtime, leaves early when requested, work shift other than regularly scheduled as required) to meet department staffing needs.
    • Works overtime only with appropriate approval when requested by manager or supervisory approval.
    • Schedules all vacation days with supervisory approval.
    • Attends and participates in meetings and is responsible for all information communicated at meetings.
    • Attends all hospital mandatory in-services on a timely basis as scheduled.
    • Follows Universal Precautions and infection control procedures at all times.

  • Follows Code of Conduct policy.

  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification when on duty; uses computerized time clock system correctly.
  • Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion.
  • Attends annual review and/or skills fair and department in-services, as scheduled.
  • Attempts to end conversations and other interactions in a positive manner; leaves others with a good impression of the Hospital Authority of Miller County and its employees.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission statement of the organization.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Operating Room Technician Certification.
  • Current BCLS Certification.
  • Current ACLS Certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in the Operating Room.
