Position Summary:

The Hotchkiss School seeks a full-time theatre and English teacher. This position includes teaching 2 classes in the English department and 2 classes in the theater department.

Instruction in English includes teaching the core curriculum and/or an elective course, depending on the expertise of the instructor and the needs of the department. Instruction in theatre will focus on performance, including acting, theatre history, writing, and production. Candidates will collaboratively build and enact curricula with other theatre faculty members. The position will involve directing one Mainstage Hotchkiss Dramatic Association (HDA) production a year. Directors work with a combination of faculty/guest artists/and student collaborators on each production. In addition, theatre faculty serve as advisors to HDA and supervise student-directed productions. Theatre faculty will maintain the organization/order of shared performance spaces, as well as the shop and storage spaces.

Through the Hotchkiss Dramatic Association (HDA), the theatre program generally stages three Mainstage productions in Walker Auditorium – our 600-seat proscenium theatre - and a collection of student-directed productions in our versatile Black Box.

The Hotchkiss theatre program cultivates theatre practitioners who are experienced and competent in all areas of the art. Each production should unite cast and crew in the development of theatrical and life skills. As an experientially based program, our educational theatre focuses on the process as much as the product.

Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in English literature, theatre, or a related discipline is required. Qualified candidates should have directing experience and should above all have a passion for theatre, have the ability to teach and contextualize it for high school students, and celebrate the diverse voices and experiences of students. Classroom teaching experience is required. This position requires weight lifting capacity of at least 25 pounds. The ideal candidate will be:

  • a student-centered educator, skilled in discussion facilitation,
  • a professional oral and written communicator,
  • eager to work collaboratively with colleagues,
  • committed to improving their practice through peer observation,
  • dedicated to making positive contributions to the student experience both inside and outside the classroom, including in dorms and on teams and clubs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Hotchkiss faculty participate actively in all aspects of community life through service in Hotchkiss’ residential, advising, and co-curricular programs. Typical responsibilities of a full-time faculty member at Hotchkiss include teaching four classes, regular duty in our residential program, periodic participation in faculty committees, or as an advisor to student clubs, and in this position, coaching one season (or the equivalent) of a co-curricular team and directing one mainstage play in collaboration with the HDA. Full-time faculty members are expected to obtain a public service endorsement on their CT driver's license within the first year of employment, so that they may drive students in school vehicles.

Compensation:

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience and education level. Full-time teachers are housed by the school. In addition, Hotchkiss provides a comprehensive benefit package, and a variety of insurance offerings, including, health, dental, vision, life, and short- and long-term disability, HSA/FSA options, and retirement benefits through TIAA. Ample funding exists to support participation in professional conferences, workshops, summer study, and travel, as well as advanced degree work. Faculty are encouraged to enjoy meals in our dining hall while school is in session.
