Located in the scenic Berkshire-Taconic landscape in the quiet northwest corner of Connecticut, The Hotchkiss School is a community in which faculty and staff members build careers and grow as professionals. We seek to identify, recruit, and develop faculty and staff members who bring a diversity of experiences, perspectives, talents, and backgrounds. Collectively, we are dedicated to supporting the intellectual, social, and emotional growth of nearly 600 students who come from around the country and the world.
In the 2024-2025 school year, our student body includes 37% of students receiving financial aid, 14% international students, and 42% domestic students of color. Geographically diverse, our students represent 38 states, 34 countries, and span 6 continents. The School is eager to accept applications from individuals who are excited to support an inclusive and warm learning community for students from a wide array of backgrounds and experiences.
Program Description
The History of Math Scholars Program affords selected high-school seniors the opportunity to conduct primary-source research into topics in the history of mathematics and physics. Students spend each day working in the archives at Cornell University on a research project of their own design on a topic they have chosen in the history of math/physics. In the evenings, students gather to discuss their findings, work on shared problems in the history of math/physics, and receive individual mentorship on their research projects. Students in the summer program join a course in their Senior year at Hotchkiss with the goal of producing a substantial final thesis on their summer research.
Position Description
The Hotchkiss School seeks a resident assistant to support student scholars in their residential and program needs. The resident assistant, alongside program faculty, is responsible for the physical and emotional well-being of students in the Program at meals, during breaks from scheduled study, at activities during the day and evenings, on field trips, as well as overnight in the dormitory. The resident assistant plays an important role in creating and maintaining an effective learning environment. The resident assistant is expected to create a welcoming, safe, and friendly environment for students, participate willingly and reliably in all aspects of the program, and uphold program guidelines for the enjoyment and safety of all students. The resident assistant is expected to conform to the highest standards of personal integrity and professional principles, reflecting a model presence for their duties and care of program students.
The ideal candidate will also be prepared to assist the program faculty in their work with students on their research. Therefore, some background and interest in math, physics, and/or primary source historical research is preferred.
Since this position entails direct pastoral care of high-school students in a dormitory setting, some experience working with teenagers in a boarding environment is strongly preferred.
Duties And Responsibilities
Through the online application which can be found at hotchkiss.org/careers under “Summer Opportunities”, interested candidates should submit a cover letter and résumé/CV. The School is committed to building and supporting a diverse community where all feel safe, seen, and supported.
