Primary Activities
- Responsible for complete direction of the Self-Help Construction program under the guidelines of the Executive Director and the Board of Directors of the agency
- Responsible for directing construction staff and the Self-Help groups
- Train other construction staff as necessary and provide supervision and technical assistance as needed
- Develop accurate cost estimates that will result in the construction of economical and high quality homes that comply with the local building codes and Rural Development specifications
- Procure tools and equipment required for home construction, preparing cost justifications as required
- Read blueprints, develop specifications and take-off materials
- Negotiate sub-contracted work and monitor the work of subcontractors
- Solve construction and interpersonal problems in an efficient and even-handed manner, ensuring a cooperative environment
- Supervise and train a group of Self-Help families in the construction of their homes
- Order materials for delivery to the construction site as needed
- Work with the Finance Director in maintaining accurate records on the cost of each family's house
- Attend pre-construction meetings as needed
- Organize and attend meetings of the group during the construction phase.
- Delegate and record each family's participation in the construction process
- Maintain a safe, orderly construction site that mitigates hazards
Key Skills
- Computer software: o Excel, Word
- Strong scheduling skills. Must be able to think through and communicate schedules to subcontractors, families and staff
- Must be very organized and keep excellent written records and files
- Ability to teach skills to unskilled individuals and families participating in the Self Help program
- Strong interpersonal skills. You will interact with a large variety of people.
