POSITION SUMMARY:
The Press Secretary/Public and Media Relations Manager (PMRM) supports the Office of Communications, Marketing and Public Engagement with the management and execution of Atlanta Housing’s (AH) public and media relations strategy. In this role, the person will work within the CMPE department to execute tactics that achieve the organization’s external goals. The PMRM will work to establish and amplify the perspective of the largest housing authority in the southeast with trade, local and national media. The PMRM will work independently with business units to identify and secure opportunities that advance AH’s mission, vision and regional goals. The PMRM will oversee critical communications projects from concept through dissemination.
This person should have a strong background in issues management, media relations, content development and a strong ability to gather and synthesize information from a range of sources. The PMRM will be responsible for developing and managing campaigns that communicate AH’s key messages to a wide array of stakeholders from the public, private and philanthropic sectors. The PMRM must be able to develop strong relationships and work collaboratively with AH staff across the organization and with external partners.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Work with team to develop integrated communications plans that highlight key projects and initiatives that align with AH’s mission and vision.
- Support the communications team with developing and managing external profiles of key subject matter experts
- Manage robust media lists that include contacts from trade, local and top tier outlets
- Cultivate strong relationships with reporters from target outlets
- Pitch subject matter experts and announcements to target outlets
- Develop messaging prep materials for subject matter experts for events and/or interviews
- Support AH’s various practice groups with communications projects as required
- Manage events and speaking opportunities for subject matter experts
- Develop media materials that highlight AH’s work and articulates the organization’s perspective in the sector that staff can utilize when interacting with various stakeholders
- Contribute to the development of creative and engaging content that will raise AH’s profile as a thought leader and influencer in the housing and human development sector
- Manage AH’s editorial calendars to ensure the organization is amplifying content that highlights its work and commitments.
- Manage various team performance reports such as, media clip reports and post-interview recaps
- Develop quarterly media monitoring reports for SVP CMPE.
Knowledge & Skill Requirements
- The successful candidate will be energetic, have strong organizational, project management and time management skills.
- Must be a self-starter and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Must have agency experience.
- This position requires strong written and oral communications skills, good eye for design, media relations experience and strong background in issues or public affairs management. Knowledge of affordable housing and community development is helpful.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office products, databases, website CMS, media monitoring tools, image editing, social media and digital communications strategies required.
- Must have strong customer service skills and the ability to work within a team environment.
- In addition, the position requires a high degree of self-motivation, dedication, creativity, and perseverance.
Education / Experience
- Specify PR agency experience strongly preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism and/or public relations and minimum of 3 to 5 years of related work experience is required.
Working Conditions
Works in an office environment. May require frequent bending, stooping, reaching and prolonged sitting and/or standing. May require regular lifting usually not exceeding 20 lbs. Some travel may be required.
