Job Summary:
The Facilities Supervisor/Maintenance Technician oversees the campus's daily operations, maintenance, and custodial care, including three buildings and surrounding grounds. This role combines hands-on technical work with team leadership and administrative coordination to ensure that all facilities are clean, safe, functional, and compliant with health, safety, and regulatory standards.
This individual will manage routine maintenance schedules, respond to urgent repair needs, coordinate special event setups, and supervise a team of janitorial and groundskeeping staff. The Facilities Supervisor will also work closely with School Administrators, vendors, and outside contractors to maintain high standards of building care, support school programs and events, and foster a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Typically reports to the Senior Director of IT, Operations, and Facilities.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of janitorial and groundskeeping staff performing cleaning and light maintenance tasks and grounds upkeep.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assign and adjust routine and daily work tasks based on priorities and facility & grounds needs.
- Monitor quality of work and guide the custodial team to ensure high standards are met.
- Select and assign the team proper cleaning materials, tools, and safety equipment.
- Recruit, hire, train, and evaluate facilities and custodial staff.
- Track and address employee time, attendance, leave requests, and performance concerns.
- When necessary, address disciplinary issues in collaboration with the Senior Director of IT, Operations, and Facilities or the HR Manager.
- Coordinate and supervise outside contractors, ensuring all work aligns with school policies and complies with local/state regulations.
- Collaborate with School Administrators to assess facility needs and prioritize projects or urgent tasks based on inspections or feedback.
- Order, receive, and track cleaning supplies, maintenance materials, and equipment inventory.
- Oversee and perform maintenance and repair work across three campus buildings and the surrounding grounds.
- Establish and maintain a routine building maintenance schedule to support preventative upkeep.
- Maintain and organize tools and equipment necessary for ongoing maintenance.
- Respond to emergency maintenance calls during and outside of scheduled hours, remotely or in person.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental health and safety regulations and interface with city, state, and federal agencies as needed.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment that supports student and staff safety.
- Coordinate set-up and takedown for daily school activities and special campus events, including after-school programs, weekends, graduations, and alumni weekends.
- Other duties as needed and assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, groundskeeping, and safety codes and regulations.
- General familiarity with basic technology (email, maintenance logs, inventory tracking, etc).
- Possess an understanding and basic skills in electrical, heating/cooling systems, ventilation, and plumbing, as well as a basic knowledge of safety codes and regulations.
- Familiarity with cleaning chemicals, equipment, and safety protocols.
- Ability to lead and supervise a small team effectively.
- Experience in estimating maintenance and repair costs.
- Communicate effectively with various constituencies across the school (leadership, employees, students, parents, contractors, and candidates).
- Strong supervisory skills, time management, and attention to detail.
- Ability to respond to emergencies outside of regular work hours.
- Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record and dependable transportation.
Education and Experience:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required; technical or trade certification is preferred.
- 3 years of experience in building maintenance, custodial supervision, and facilities operations.
