JOB TITLE: PHLEBOTOMIST/EKG TECHNICIAN
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Performs venipuncture, capillary puncture, and arterial puncture on adult and pediatric patients. Instructs patients in all urine and stool collection procedures and testing requirements. Performs standard electrocardiogram (EKG) testing and other related exams on patients according to established standards and practices. Communicates in a manner that promotes clinic and laboratory professionalism as well as a comfortable phlebotomy.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity, eye-hand coordination, and some handling and lifting of patients. Frequent walking, sitting, bending, standing, and often required to work in strained positions. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception. Must be able to commute to other clinic locations as required.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, bloodborne pathogens, and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Possible exposure to electrical hazards.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Prepares equipment and workstation to efficiently collect blood specimens.
- Performs venipuncture, arterial, and capillary punctures on patients. Identifies and labels specimens.
- Fills out appropriate test requisitions and orders tests in LIS. Makes proper charge on service sheet. Obtains consent forms required from the patient as appropriate.
- Conducts designated laboratory testing (whole blood glucose) and Quality Control for such testing.
- Instructs patients on urine collection procedures (random and timed collections).
PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Skill required in all blood collection techniques (venous, capillary, and arterial). Work requires critical accuracy in the identification of patients, specimen labeling at a fast pace, and in handling emergency situations. Skill in labeling and maintaining all materials for collection. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, and nursing medical staff, and the public. Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions. Ability to follow written protocols. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate clearly, and in a manner which promotes a highly "team-oriented" approach with coworkers and clinic employees. Skill in eliciting appropriate information and gaining cooperation from patients.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or GED
EXPERIENCE:
One year of phlebotomy and/or EKG experience preferred.
CERTIFICATE/LICENSE:
Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
ALTERNATIVE TO MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.
