Research Assistant III Hinson Lab Farmington, CT The Hinson lab is seeking an independent, highly-motivated individual who wants to join our multidisciplinary team focused on the development of new genetic models and genome editing therapeutics for inheritable forms of cardiovascular disease. The ideal candidate would have prior rigorous training in cell and molecular biology including molecular cloning, immunoblotting, and basic next-generation sequencing assays such as amplicon sequencing and/or RNA-sequencing. Additional skills that would be of particular interest to the position include pluripotent stem cell handling/differentiation and mouse cardiac physiology methods and analyses including echocardiography. The candidate will be supported by several NIH grants to utilize our laboratories human cardiac microtissue platform and mouse models to identify new therapies for genetic forms of heart failure. The Hinson lab at the Jackson Laboratory for Genomic Medicine and UConn Health studies human cardiovascular disorders especially heart failure using a combination of approaches including genome editing, pluripotent stem cell technology, mouse models, genomics assays, and tissue engineering. We are a highly-collaborative multi-disciplinary team that includes expertise in genome biology, computation biology, tissue engineering, cardiac physiology and clinical cardiovascular medicine. Requirements  Proposes alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives demonstrating knowledge of other scientific areas and related research  Demonstrates scientific knowledge and analytical skills to monitor, modify, and design the research process. Designs, modifies, and troubleshoots highly specialized equipment.  Independently expands scope of literature search to support and/or propose alternative experimental methods, procedures and/or techniques.  Gathers information to prepare budget and proposes estimates for acquisition of supplies and equipment  Analyzes and resolves variations in complex tests, experiments and procedures; designs and implements modifications and changes to techniques, procedures and quality control measures  Leads multiple, concurrent projects and/or multi-faceted projects; directs others in making modifications  Evaluates documentation of results; leads efforts to modify and adapt research methodologies in collaboration with others; ensures compliance with regulatory standards.  Manages laboratory resources, may include budget and personnel; establishes priorities in the use of resources including space, field, equipment and/or facilities.  Understands research goals thoroughly; can instruct and inform others about past and future research directives. Also coordinates with outside collaborators to open new avenues or points of interest of research. Shows a willingness to teach as well as be taught.  The RA III may have direct supervisory responsibilities and is accountable to ensure the effective training and development program for assigned personnel and to identify and develop staff. The RAIII is responsible to develop training and development programs to strengthen technical and management skills. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, or related field of study Prior research experience in at least two of the following areas: pluripotent stem cell biology and differentiation, cellular physiology, next-generation genome sequencing assays, tissue engineering especially involving engineered cardiac tissues, and in vivo cardiac physiology and function especially in mouse models including echocardiography. Experience in single cell technologies for transcriptomics, flow cytometry (or other forms of cytometric analyses), and confocal microscopy particularly live cell imaging is also desirable. Excellent writing and communication skills, able to work independently and effectively with other members in a productive team Experience with R, Python or similar statistical package is helpful, as well as experience with clustering, pathway, genetic and genomic data analyses and bioinformatics We are a diverse and inclusive research group, aspiring to produce top science and scientists through attentive and progressive mentoring and interdisciplinary teamwork.
