Job Responsibilities: Behavioral Health Consultant
The Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC) provides integrated behavioral healthcare services as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team in a primary care or pediatrics setting. The BHC collaborates closely with medical providers and other care team members to support patients to achieve optimal health and behavioral health outcomes.
- Maintains a physical presence among and active communication with the medical providers and teams during clinic operating hours.
- Available to provide brief same-day interventions for patients’ behavioral health and psychosocial needs and for needs related to coping with medical conditions and treatment. Conduct risk assessments, as indicated.
- Proactively scrub medical providers’ schedules daily to identify unmet behavioral health and related needs. Proactively contacts medical team to discuss/recommend same-day BHC consultation with identified patients
- Available for limited scheduled initial interventions as appropriate.
- As per response protocols, perform consultation for all patients without ongoing behavioral health care who score above identified clinical cut-off score on behavioral health screeners.
- Participate in regular interdisciplinary team meetings and daily rounding/huddles with medical and enabling services, to review high-risk cases, coordinate care, and discuss treatment progress with medical teams
- Assist medical team to develop BHC role in response protocols for identified medical conditions and treatment issues (e.g., chronic pain, insomnia, diabetes, medication adherence, etc.)
- Provides services in exam rooms when possible, in order to underscore team-based, patient-focused care and decrease stigma around BH services.
- Performs brief, limited follow-up visits for selected patients.
- Provides psychoeducation and behavioral strategies that align with the patient’s cultural and socioeconomic background, supporting effective and respectful care.
- Refers patients with significant BH need to ongoing BH specialty services, as needed.
- Support population health initiatives, including any future registry utilization and stepped, treat-to-target care.
- Support medical team and patients as necessary with chronic disease management programs, group medical appointments/classes.
- Work with medical providers and team members to develop culturally responsive intervention strategies, enhancing the teams’ understanding of behavioral health needs in diverse patient populations.
- Work closely with Enabling Services and Referrals Departments to support meeting patients’ case management and referral needs.
- Provides medical provider with same-day verbal feedback on patient encounters.
- Prepares brief clinical documentation of findings, interventions delivered, and recommendations for medical team. Maintains clinical records and other necessary paperwork in a timely manner to comply with all administrative regulations.
- Provides psychoeducation to medical teams regarding common behavioral health conditions, psychological and behavioral aspects of common medical conditions, principles of brief evidence-based interventions, and tenets of integrated care.

Required Education and/or Experience
- Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Social Work, or related behavioral health field required.
- Indiana Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Marriage Counselor, Clinical Social Worker, or Family Therapist required.
- Training and experience providing pediatric behavioral health service required.
- Experience providing integrated team-based behavioral health services strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of state and county reporting requirements required.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office (specifically Word and Excel), Electronic Medical and Health records, and other applications.
