The Dean of Students works to uphold the philosophy of the school and serves as a member of The Janus School’s Administrative Team. He/she reports to the Head of School and works with the Administrative Team, Board of Trustee’s, and the entire learning community to advance the school’s mission. The Dean of Students is an active leadership role, designing, implementing, and evaluating systems for social-emotional guidance, student-based intervention plans, and school-wide guidelines and policy systems. The Dean of Students communicates with parents regarding student-based intervention plans, represents the school at PIAA meetings, and actively, plans, promotes, attends, and evaluates school-wide events and student co-curricular activities. As a member of the Administrative Team, the Dean of Students, attends all Board of Trustee meetings, collaborates to develop The Janus School’s Strategic Plan, serves on Board Committee’s, supports academic programming needs, promotes professional development opportunities, assists with annual financial audits as requested, and is an active part of PAIS accreditation and re-accreditation processes. His/her responsibilities are fundamental in building a positive and vibrant Janus community.

Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
- Identify emergent issues and facilitate the collaborative development and implementation of structured, yet flexible student-based academic, attendance, behavioral, and/or socio-emotional interventions within the School, working directly with students and teachers and communicating to parents and instructional teams in a timely manner in order to enhance student outcomes
- Collaborate with the school counselor/licensed clinical social worker to coordinate communication between a students’ external providers, parents, and their instructional team as needed
- Communicate with external transportation providers to facilitate the safety and social-emotional needs of students that use these services
- Provide teacher education regarding intervention processes, communication with parents, and classroom management, both informally as needed and through formal professional development presentations
- Maintain official records of student-based interventions, including discipline reports, and school-parent communications as needed
- Support and model strategies for staff and faculty as requested by Head of School
- Advance professional development opportunities for staff and faculty as requested by Head of School
- Work with the faculty and Student Council to develop, organize, and promote school-wide events and co-curricular activities to build community and social-emotional growth
- Assume responsibility and maintain budget lines appropriate for Student co-curricular activities, including, but not limited to, Student Council fundraising and event planning, School-wide field trips (including field trip transportation coordination) and parent/student events, and After-School Programming
- Assist in school accreditation, and long-range planning, including the development of School-wide Strategic Plans’ and financial audits
- Represent The Janus School in the independent and learning difference school network, as well as at Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association meetings
- Clerk, oversight, and member of Guidelines and Student Events/Field Trip Committee as directed by Head of School
- Lead member of the Safe2Say Team and the Risk Assessment Team, and a member of the Health, Safety, & Security Committee
- Provide Guideline Updates to the Janus Community as needed
- Publish and revise Student/Parent Handbook annually and as needed with the Administrative Team, Staff, and Faculty; final approval by Head of School.
- In coordination with the Office Administrator, Director of Technology, and Director of Development and Marketing announce student events internally and externally, and coordinate communication among the Janus community
- Attend all Administrative Team and Board of Trustee meetings and participate in committee work as directed by Head of School
