What are the responsibilities and job description for the Learning Specialist position at The John Carroll School?
The John Carroll School seeks a qualified Learning Specialist for full-time, 10-month employment in the 2025–2026 school year. The Learning Specialist will be expected to facilitate success and growth in student’s academic and interpersonal skills through instruction. It is important to create a safe and optimal learning environment in which student progress is documented, individual student needs are addressed, and effective communication with students, parents, administration, faculty and staff thrives. As a representative of The John Carroll School, the Learning Specialist is expected to support and carry out the School's Catholic mission.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Effectively collaborate with teachers to implement best teaching practices for students with learning differences to include planning and consultation regarding assignments and assessments.
- Tutor individual students within St. Joseph Program classes, specifically in English, writing and literacy content.
- Evaluate the individual academic needs of each student referred to in student’s Individual Accommodation Plan to determine the most appropriate interventions.
- Proactively monitor the academic progress of students and develop academic plans for success.
- Construct practice/study materials to aid students in preparing for assessments.
- Promote an educational atmosphere that fosters joy for learning, growth mindset and a positive school tone.
- Develop strong relationships with students, teachers and parents, and demonstrate the capacity to promote an inclusive, welcoming school environment.
- Participate in faculty, curriculum and team meetings, school committees, and professional development, as needed.
- Support the School through attendance at evening and weekend events as necessary, including, but not limited to, admissions, Athletics and club events, parent/teacher conferences, etc.
- Chaperone a minimum of four extracurricular activities.
- Perform assigned duties supervising students, such as advisory.
- Assist the director with all other aspects of the program.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Previous teaching or student teaching experience required.
- Ability to differentiate instruction is required.
- Competence in remedial reading instruction and writing support.
- Exceptional time-management, organizational and planning skills.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to relate and work with diverse groups, to include students, parents and classroom teachers.
- Competency with facilitation and technical skills.
- Collaborative working style and strong work ethic.
- Commitment to professional growth.
- Commitment to the mission statement of The John Carroll School.
- Employment is contingent upon satisfactory state and federal background checks, driving record check, completion of VIRTUS Training, and completion of all required employment paperwork.
