Assistant Director of Development, Events & Stewardship

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a onsite work arrangement with an onsite presence of 5 days per week. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

Reporting to the Director of Blue Jays Unlimited, this position focuses on planning, executing and monitoring continuous engagement activities for alumni, parents and friends who are primarily affiliated with Johns Hopkins Athletics; specifically planning and coordinating events, volunteer activities, and communication strategies. This position is responsible for reaching and exceeding annual targets to achieve the strategic goal of broadening and strengthening the base of constituent support and engagement with Johns Hopkins University alumni, parents and friends to include all constituents, both donors and prospects that may be affiliated with Johns Hopkins Athletics.

Events

Key responsibilities:

  • Work with Director of Blue Jays Unlimited to assess the goals and requirements of an event and to facilitate agreement on the appropriate budget.
  • Manage proposals from vendors including but not limited to caterers, florists, sound and stage management contractors, and musicians. Determine the vendor who will most appropriately meet the assessed goals and budget limitations.
  • Manage invitation mailing lists and invitation language in consultation with the Director and staff of the Athletics Department. Oversee production of invitations with outside vendors.
  • Manage logistic support to include; security, parking, transfer, plant operation services, event staffing, signage, tents, decorations, photography, video, audio –visual, or taping needs as dictated by the event.
  • Attend all on campus BJU events with the intent to engage prospects and steward current donors.
  • Attend select home games to engage alumni, parents, and friends through events.
  • Weekend and overnight travel will be required in order to provide logistical support of athletics development events and activities.


Communications

  • Interact daily with external constituents as the first point of contact with alumni, parents, and friends for the Athletics Development Office.
  • Develop the brand strategy and comprehensive marketing plan for Blue Jays Unlimited
  • Develop segmentation and contact strategies that are consistent with the overall objectives of Blue Jays Unlimited.
  • Create elevated content to share stories of Hopkins Athletics donors and the importance of annual philanthropic support.
  • Serve as the staff writer for coaching newsletters for all varsity programs.
  • Serve as the Blue Jays Unlimited liaison across Development & Alumni Relations to provide athletics & recreation updates, annual fundraising needs, and campaign priorities.
  • Maintain, enhance and edit content on the Blue Jays Unlimited website in partnership with the Athletic Communications Office.
  • Assist with maintenance of prospect and donor data in JHAS (Salesforce) and Constant Contact.
  • Manage all social media for the Athletics Development Office; including updating and promoting initiatives through Facebook and Instagram
  • Other duties as requested.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years related experience
  • Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula


Preferred Qualifications

  • Fast-paced, highly variable, and entrepreneurial; this role is best suited for an individual with deft interpersonal skills and collaborative instincts, high adaptability and creativity, intellectual curiosity, a service mindset, and a keen interest in advancing the mission of one of the world’s great research universities.
  • Strong data management skills to effectively use the JHAS constituent management database, Microsoft Office suite, and other systems. Experience with Salesforce platform is preferred, but not required.
  • Keen project management skills to determine priorities and manage multiple projects at once.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills; demonstrated effective writing skills.
  • Comfortable working in a complex, multi-divisional, and fast-paced organization.
  • Able to work a flex schedule including nights, weekends, and out of state travel as required.
  • Knowledge of NCAA compliance rules.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to travel.
  • Must live within commuting distance to the Baltimore campus and able to work in an office setting five days per week.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination.
