CO Nurse Practitioner

The Department of Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center, at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking a CO Nurse Practitioner to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team to optimize team performance and patient outcomes. We are seeking an excellent clinician to provide clinical care to adults at the Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center Campus.

The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing high quality and effective patient care through the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of acute and chronic mental illness. In addition to providing direct patient care, the Nurse Practitioner also educates patients and family members regarding mental illness. The Nurse Practitioner shares responsibility for the provision of excellent health care in compliance with state and federal accreditation requirements, and practices within the guidelines of the Department of Psychiatry, Johns Hopkins Medicine and in accordance with the Maryland Board of Nursing. The Nurse Practitioner is granted privileges by the Howard County General Hospital Medical Board; these privileges list specific tasks and are reviewed annually.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

  • Rounding and medication management of adult and pediatric patients on the emergency department consult service. Complete progress notes in EPIC and bill for services provided.
  • Responds in a timely manner to requests for psychiatric consultation for adults and pediatrics who are patients in the emergency department.
  • Make recommendations for any change in observation level based on risk assessments to primary ED attending.
  • Manage seclusions, restraints and emergency medications in conjunction with primary ED attending.
  • Required to participate in on-call after hours rotation shared by Psychiatry providers, reachable by phone and/or pager, which includes one weeknight of call per week.
  • Required to participate in weekend call (6 weekends per year), which includes coming into the hospital to round on all inpatients, completing consults requested by med/surg units, and taking calls for admissions and discharges from the social workers in the ED.
  • Required to participate in Department of Psychiatry provider and staff meetings.
  • Performs psychiatric assessment, formulates diagnosis, and in consultation with referring physician recommends and completes appropriate disposition.
  • Provides requesting physician with results of assessment and disposition plan.
  • Interview patient and performs psychosocial assessment, mental status examination and past psychiatric history.
  • Contacts family or any collateral informants necessary to provide information necessary to complete an assessment.
  • Formulates an appropriate treatment/disposition plan for patient.
  • Coordinate care for patients to achieve clinical and organizational outcomes. Uses advanced clinical and theoretical knowledge to identify acute and/or chronic health problems through a comprehensive, age-appropriate assessment of patients using skills in taking medical histories, screening, physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests, making tentative diagnoses, prescribing appropriate medications and treatments.
  • Provides evidence-based care and provides patient education for self-care chronic disease management.
  • Effectively uses resources. Prioritizes and organizes work to meet the changing priorities of Howard County Medical Center. Provides guidance and direction to other staff where applicable to promote quality improvement/patient safety projects.
  • Accountable for own patient care decisions. On a regular and continuous basis, exercises administrative judgment and assumes responsibility for decisions, consequences, and results having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service within the functional area.
  • Coordinate with inpatient psychiatric unit daily after rounds to determine bed availability and appropriate patient placement.
  • Help manage bed flow and reaching out to other Johns Hopkins hospitals when in need of beds for ED. Can also work with on-call provider if referrals are made to our inpatient unit from other Johns Hopkins hospitals if we have beds available. This assists in maintaining support and good relationships with other Johns Hopkins institutions.
  • Assist in bed searches for patients when needed to help with bed management/flow in ED.
  • Assist in Insurance authorizations when needed to help with bed management/flow in ED.
  • Offer clinical support to ED psychiatric social workers, nurses, and other colleagues in emergency room.
  • Medication evaluation and management of psychiatric outpatients one day per week.
  • Responsible for other clinical duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in nursing.
  • Registered Nurse license and Certified as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner.
  • Must be licensed as NP in the State of Maryland.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment. Completion of the Howard County General Hospital credentialing process is required prior to start date.
  • Additional experience may substitute for master’s degree.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Psychiatry experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated competence in the delivery of health care to a diverse group of adult, child, and adolescent patients preferred.
  • Two years related experience as a registered nurse preferred.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
