Sr. Associate Director, Parent & Family Programs

Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) supports Johns Hopkins’ focus on research, teaching and patient care, and its role as a national and global leader in higher education. We create and foster enduring relationships that result in advocacy and philanthropic support for Johns Hopkins University & Medicine—strengthening the institution through partnerships with donors, alumni, volunteer leaders, faculty, students, staff, and patients.

Johns Hopkins University supports a flexible work model which includes four different work modalities. This role has a hybrid work arrangement with an onsite presence of 3 days per week. The manager will confirm the team’s core onsite days where the majority / all team members will work in the office. Employees who travel on university business can count those days towards their onsite days.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, Homewood Programs, the Director leads and manages the overall major and annual giving strategies for parents of undergraduates in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering. The Director manages a two-person team.

The Director works closely with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering Sr. Directors of Development, the Schools’ Major Gift officers, the Regional Gift officers, International programs, Athletics (Blue Jays Unlimited), to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward parent major and principal gift prospects. The Director also identifies and recruits leadership parents for The Hopkins Parent & Family Leadership Giving Circle and the Hopkins Parent & Family Council (HPFC); oversees Council activities including bi-annual meetings, solicitations and other volunteer activities; and plans and manages cultivation events involving the Vice Provost of Student Affairs, and the Deans, and acts as a resource for all families. This position also collaborates with Student Affairs and its Office of Family Engagement. Travel will be required in this position.

Key responsibilities :

Fund Raising :

  • Develop and lead overall major and annual gift strategies for current and former Homewood undergraduate parents & families.
  • Focus on commitments of $25,000 and will raise $500,000-$1,000,000 per year. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a major gift prospect pool of 100 parents & families.
  • Responsible for up to 100 visits annually and will implement appropriate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies in accordance with institutional standards.
  • Solicit gifts in support of Johns Hopkins including capital, scholarship, endowment and annual fund needs.
  • Prepare proposals, solicitation letters and other cultivation and stewardship materials for prospects and donors.
  • Work directly with the Executive Director of Development, Homewood Programs, and the Vice Provost of Student Affairs to establish fundraising priorities.
  • Participate in all regularly scheduled development office and major gift staff meetings and institutional development training sessions.
  • Meet monthly with the Vice Provost of Student Affairs.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of all procedures of Johns Hopkins development & Alumni Relations.

Parent & Family Leadership Programs :

  • Oversee and direct the Hopkins Parent & Family Leadership Giving Circle; to include solicitation planning and recruitment of members, strategizing for recruitment of members, planning and execution of events, stewardship of donors and collaboration with the Principal Gifts Office and the Office of the President.
  • Manage and participate in leadership fundraising strategies for all international prospects. Responsible for strategy and implementation of leadership activity in Asia; including solicitation and recruitment of members. Collaborate with the Office of the Vice Provost of Student Life to plan and implement annual orientation and community building events internationally.
  • Partner with the Office of Family Engagement to plan philanthropic engagement events during Family Orientation and Family Weekend activities; including dinners and receptions with the Vice Provost of Student Affairs, and the deans.
  • The Director will actively collaborate with colleagues throughout Johns Hopkins University to ensure forward momentum, strategic planning and implementation to result in the continued growth of volunteer programs.
  • Hopkins Student Center (HSC) :

  • Develop and lead a parent & family campaign for the new Hopkins Student Center soliciting current and former Homewood undergraduate families.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director of Development, Homewood Programs and the Vice Provost of Student Affairs to plan engagement events for HSC prospects.
  • Supervision :

  • Supervise one Associate Director, and one Assistant Director in activities related to identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of prospects.
  • Participate in annual evaluation process for each employee in consultation with the Executive Director of Development, Homewood Programs.
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Five years professional related experience.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in fundraising, sales / marketing is required; preferably in higher education.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently, take initiative, problem solve, and follow through with assignments from start to finish.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism, collaboration, diplomacy, and confidentiality in a team-focused environment.
  • Familiarity with University nomenclature, protocols and programs as well as any previous experience with JHAS (Hopkins Development Database) or other Salesforce CRM are highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and external parties.
