Location: Richmond, Virginia
Job Overview:
We are seeking passionate and dedicated Counselors (Associate or Licensed) to join our dynamic team in Richmond, Virginia. The Counselor role oversees all aspects of a patient’s treatment, ensuring coordination and continuity of care from admission through discharge and follow-up. Counselors promote performance improvement and service delivery by providing comprehensive psychological therapy and substance abuse counseling for assigned patients, including family and group therapy.
This role is key in addressing the causes and effects of addiction and requires close collaboration with the clinical team to ensure the best outcomes for our patients.
Key Responsibilities:
- Clinical Coordination: Interface with the clinical team in decision-making, including attending all clinical meetings and providing input on patient care.
- Assessment and Diagnosis: Assess patients for substance abuse using DSM criteria to determine appropriate care levels based on ASAM guidelines.
- Treatment Planning: Prepare and deliver the substance abuse counseling portion of the patient’s treatment plan, revising it as necessary to reflect progress or changes in the patient’s condition.
- Substance Abuse Counseling: Provide counseling services specified in the treatment plan, conducting individual, group, and family therapy as assigned.
- Discharge Planning: Develop discharge and continuum of care plans to ensure a smooth transition to appropriate levels of care.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate clinical records, documenting counseling services, assessments, updates, and follow-ups.
- Coordination of Support Services: Assist patients and their families in accessing support services, including coordination with external referral sources (e.g., legal, school, employer).
- Crisis Intervention: Provide intervention during crisis situations, utilizing a multidisciplinary team approach.
- Team Collaboration: Actively participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team for assigned patients, attending team meetings, and contributing to patient care planning.
- Compliance: Adhere to HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2 guidelines, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with all organizational policies and industry regulations.
- Other Duties: Carry out administrative and clinical tasks as needed and assigned.
Schedule:
- Monday through Friday: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Saturday rotation: A couple of Saturdays per month (employees can flex their schedules to accommodate this).
- Note: As additional counselors are brought on board, Saturday shifts will become less frequent.
Virginia-Specific Requirements:
In accordance with 12VAC30—130-5020, the following certifications or licenses are required:
- CSAC (Certified Substance Abuse Counselor)
- CSAC-A (Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant)
- CSAC-Supervisee (Certified Substance Abuse Counselor – Supervisee)
- LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker)
- LPC (Licensed Professional Counselor)
- LMFT (Licensed Marriage Family Therapist)
Qualifications:
- For Associate Counselors:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Active pursuit or completion of relevant state licensure (e.g., CSAC, CSAC-A, or CSAC-Supervisee).
- Previous experience in addiction counseling or mental health is a plus.
- For Licensed Counselors:
- Master's degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- Active, valid state licensure (e.g., LCSW, LPC, LMFT).
- Previous experience in addiction counseling or mental health preferred.
Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
- Adherence to organizational policies, procedures, and confidentiality standards (HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2).
- Strong understanding of healthcare legal policies and regulations.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in crisis situations.
- Crisis de-escalation skills and incident response.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Ability to maintain professional boundaries while building therapeutic rapport with patients.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize responsibilities.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office and EMR/EHR systems.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with minimal supervision.
