Job Summary
TKA is a Christ-Centered school grounded in a Biblical worldview, and we are looking for a Color Guard Director / Caption Head who is a follower of Jesus Christ and is dedicated to the school’s Christ-Centered mission. The primary responsibility of this position is to teach and coach students in the art of color guard performance. This role involves instructing students in the execution of choreographed routines, emphasizing skills such as flag spinning, rifle manipulation, and dance movement. You will play a vital role in developing the technical abilities, artistic expression, teamwork, and performance quality of color guard members.
Requirements
Essential Job Functions
Regular Activities
- Develop and implement instructional strategies for color guard rehearsals and performances
- Teach proper techniques for flag spinning, rifle manipulation, dance movement, and other skills
- Create and choreograph routines that showcase the talents and abilities of the team
- Collaborate with instructors, directors, and staff members to ensure alignment with overall artistic and performance goals
- Foster a positive, inclusive environment to encourage creativity, collaboration, and personal growth
- Attend competitions, performances, and other events to support and supervise team members
- Assist in the design, selection, and maintenance of equipment, uniforms, and props
- Assist with stretch/warmups, movement, and dance instruction for color guard and marching band
- Design and direct competitive Winter Guard season
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators regarding program updates, schedules, and expectations
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- 5 years Color Guard experience preferred
- 3 years experience instructing preferred
Skills and Abilities
- Choreography: Ability to create dynamic and visually appealing routines that showcase the skills of the color guard members
- Music Interpretation: Understanding of music theory fundamentals and the ability to choreograph movements that complement the music being performed
- Leadership: Strong leadership skills to effectively lead and motivate a team of color guard performers
- Teaching Skills: Ability to break down complex movements into manageable steps and effectively teach them to individuals or groups
- Adaptability: Being able to modify routines and teaching methods to accommodate the strengths and weaknesses of different performers
- Attention to Detail: Ensure that every movement and transition is executed with precision
- Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other staff members, such as band director and other Caption Heads , to ensure cohesive performances

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- Work will be performed on and off campus
- May occasionally have to lift up to 30-pounds
- Work is generally performed seasonally, July - March
- The Marching Band and Color Guard schedule is established each spring.
- The months listed are approximate, and the annual start and end date will be dictated by the band calendar and the department’s needs.
Salary & Benefits
- Pay Grid: VPA Color Guard Instructor
- Pay Grid Range: $9,600 - $15,000 annually
- The amounts listed above represent the pay for the entire season based on the routine hours that are expected to be worked. The actual pay will be determined by their applicable years of experience. The starting pay listed reflects this position's minimum pay. The top pay range represents the top of the pay grid for this position. It is rare for a candidate to enter this position at the top of the pay grid. Most candidates can expect to enter in the lower to middle section of the pay grid, depending on experience and education.
