The Kinkaid School is seeking a Science Teacher to join its Middle School team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for collaboration with colleagues and proven success in connecting the content to students’ innate inquisitiveness and critical thinking skills. Reporting to the Science & Technology Department Chair, the Middle School Science Teacher will be called on to promote high levels of learning engagingly and effectively, focusing on interdisciplinary practices while utilizing a variety of instructional methodologies and curriculum resources. The Middle School Science Teacher is responsible for creating a supportive learning environment and instructional program that results in students meeting their potential and achieving academic success. This position includes responsibility for teaching four (4) sections of science and for advising a small group of 10-12 students.

The Kinkaid School is a co-educational, nonsectarian day school enrolling over 1,400 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student body is divided into the Lower School (PreK - 4th Grade), the Middle School (5th grade - 8th grade) and the Upper School (9th grade - 12th grade). Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, Kinkaid offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, and diverse culture.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Teach 7th grade life science to approximately 65 students
- Advise a group of 10-12 students and be a member of one or more grade level teams
- Develop and implement instructional plans, activities, and assessments that actively engage students in meaningful learning experiences
- Incorporate numerous hands-on labs and activities that teach STEM-based skills
- Work collaboratively with subject teaching partners, the Grade Level Team, the Science Department, and administrators to foster a positive student learning experience
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals regularly
- Maintain an accurate record of student attendance and grades
- Provide students with timely feedback and keep parents or guardians informed of students’ academic and social/emotional progress
- Participate in grade-level team, department, and divisional faculty meetings
- Assist in assessing changing curricular needs and offering suggestions for improvement
- Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community
- Set performance goals and engage in a cycle of professional growth and development
- Exemplify Kinkaid’s four core values of honesty, responsibility, respect, and kindness in interactions with all members of the community
- Responsible for additional supervisory duties, leading a middle school club, and traveling on grade-level overnight trips
- Fulfill additional responsibilities as requested by the division head, such as serving on a school committee or coaching a sport. These roles are contingent upon interest, skill set, and the School’s needs
Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in science or pedagogy with an emphasis on science education (Master’s degree preferred)
- A minimum of three years of experience teaching science to middle school children
- Proficient use of Microsoft Office, Google Drive, Docs, and Google Apps for Education
- Proven understanding and ability to teach Nature of Science, Scientific Methods, in addition to the Middle School Science content
- Ability to incorporate inquiry into instructional strategies to create a student-centered problem-solving approach to learning
- Core knowledge of the development of middle school-age children
- Core knowledge about research-based practices for effective instruction of the middle school age learner
- A passion for and experience with integrating technology into the curriculum to serve the needs of all learners
