Role Overview
Reporting to the Teaching and Learning Manager (Youth and Community Development Programs), the KKCF Tech Teaching Assistant will be primarily responsible for supporting the KKCF Tech Instructor with tasks related to technical class instruction and fellow support for the Karim Kharbouch Coding Fellowship for high-school-aged learners. This includes assistance with class facilitation, instructional material preparation, assignment review and grading, small group and individual office hours, and liaising with the student success team to ensure holistic learner support.

The ideal candidate will be an energetic and flexible educator with a problem-solving orientation and curious mindset who communicates effectively and possesses the ability to:
  • Establish and maintain a supportive learning environment that prioritizes high expectations and respect for individual learning needs.
  • Execute exceptional time management to balance timely completion of class resources, class facilitation, and weekly grading deadlines.
  • Communicate effectively and openly about program challenges, successes, and needs
  • Provide meaningful guidance and instructional support to learners with diverse skill levels and experience with technology.
TKH adapts to changing circumstances and priorities, making job expectations dynamic. This description outlines essential functions but does not limit the tasks that may be assigned.

Supporting Instruction and Classroom Management (70%)
  • Assist with the facilitation of a virtual coding and design summer intensive for teens and young adults, including support via chat, Slack, and breakout rooms (see schedule details below).
  • Model and set a strong culture of high expectations and a growth mindset through active and engaging class facilitation support. Active and engaging support includes tasks like initiating breakout room sessions for students who need extra support, asking questions in Zoom chat to engage students in the lesson, responding to student questions in Zoom chat, managing the Zoom waiting room to ensure students are admitted promptly, following along with facilitator slides, and more.
  • Meet regularly with the Instructor assigned to your classroom to ensure shared expectations for class facilitation and support, pedagogy, grading, instructional resource management, and readiness to execute assigned duties.
  • Review a high volume of student assignments and provide feedback and scores to students in accordance with the grading schedule and rubrics. In this 6-week program, meeting tight grading deadlines and providing learners with actionable feedback are critical aspects of ensuring student success. Rubrics will be provided for every assignment and must be applied consistently to ensure fair scoring.
  • Support with the ongoing assessment of individual student needs through monitoring learner progress toward program and learning goals.
  • Closely collaborate with the KKCF Tech Instructor on instructional matters including class facilitation and support, pedagogy, grading, and instructional resource development and management.
  • Elevate challenges and solicit support from the Instructor (and Teaching and Learning Manager as needed) on classroom resources, management, and learning activities.
  • Provide additional support to students outside the classroom during designated office hours via Slack, LMS, and web conferencing.
  • Lead by example as a technology professional, to be an excellent role model for our students.
  • Attend professional development and training sessions as needed.
  • As needed, act as substitute facilitator in the event the Instructor is unavailable for class.
Instructional Material Preparation (20%)
  • Assist with the preparation of instructional resources for high-quality instruction. This may include drafting or refining slide decks, hands-on activities, discussion prompts, group work exercises, individual exercises, reference materials, and more.
  • Assist with making instructional resources (assignments, reference materials, relevant links for class, class recordings) available to learners through the LMS for use before, during, or after class pending use cases.
Team Meetings and Reporting (10%)
  • Work with student success specialists to resolve challenges or concerns with KKCF fellows’ behavior or performance.
  • Attend weekly meetings to align with the KKCF student success team on cohort progress, challenges, and outcomes.
  • Attend scheduled meetings with the Teaching and Learning team to address instructional challenges and opportunities.
  • Attend scheduled 1:1’s with the Teaching and Learning Manager.
Schedule Requirements
Candidates must be available for the specific weekly events described below for the duration of the program:
KKCF Class Time & Office Hours:
  • Cohort 11: Virtually on Tuesdays - Thursdays from 11:30am - 4:30pm EST (8:30am - 1:30pm PST) for the duration of the 6-week program (June 16 - July 25, 2025).
  • Cohorts 12 & 13: Virtually on Tuesdays - Thursdays from 10:00am - 3:00 pm EST for the duration of the 6-week program (July 7 - August 15, 2025).
The remaining weekly hours are flexible, including a balance of standard workday hours between 9:00am - 5:00pm local time for team meetings and training.

Qualifications
  • Previous professional or academic experience in roles teaching, coaching, or tutoring others in technology skills
  • Proficiency in the following skills: HTML, CSS, beginner JavaScript, UX/UI, wireframing, web design, graphic design, computational thinking
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Google Suite, Google Classroom and other Learning Management Systems
  • Previous experience in classroom environments is preferred
  • Experience working with youth, teens, and young adults is preferred
  • Experience with eLearning, computer-enhanced teaching, and blended learning approaches preferred
  • Comfort and patience working with beginner-level learners and translating technical instructions and practices across devices (e.g. helping someone understand the steps to use email apps on both their mobile phone and laptop).
  • Experience developing lesson plans, hands-on learning activities, and instructional materials a plus
  • Previous experience working with underprivileged communities is a plus
  • Strong knowledge of local communities, neighborhoods, and place-based histories
  • Computer proficiency, including Google Suite
  • Superb written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to conduct and coordinate multiple tasks and projects under pressure and meet deadlines;
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to produce high-quality work;
  • Able to work in ambiguous and fast-paced environments;
  • Analytical skills and strong attention to detail;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with others, including actively reaching out to colleagues to support or consult on projects and maintaining a collaborative work environment

Compensation
  • $21.00/hour
  • Pre-tax commuter benefits
  • 10 days of sick time per year
Hybrid Work at TKH
All full-time staff are expected to come into a TKH office or the field (community and industry events, including conferences or travel for work) 1-2 days per week, and the Leadership Team will be encouraged to come into a TKH office at least two times per week. There will be one consistent team day a week that will vary by team. Please note that there are some roles that may require being on-site more based on the job responsibilities.

In addition to the 1 team day, there will be weeks when the expectation is 2 days/week based on required meetings. These may include FAM meetings (the First Friday of the month), department stepbacks, professional development, retreats, events, or other purposeful reasons, as requested by your supervisor or team lead. For convenience, managers are encouraged to schedule department stepbacks and all-team stepbacks during the same week for any staff traveling into NYC.

Part time staff are not required to come into the office, but are always welcome to attend.
