ABOUT LATINO MEDIA COLLABORATIVE

Latino Media Collaborative (LMC) is an emerging nonprofit that leverages the power of ethnic and community media for positive social change in Latino communities while supporting the advancement of the sector. LMC engages in research, advocacy, and capacity building using a collaborative model with partner media outlets. LMC also manages multi-platform outreach campaigns and develops original content under its flagship initiative, CALÓ NEWS, a digital English-language news site.

CALÓ NEWS champions Latinos/as/x in our coverage of issues. We will increase the breadth and depth of knowledge about our communities by sharing authentic stories, highlighting our accomplishments and bringing light to the topics that mean the most to us, including healthcare, justice, education and media representation. We will also publish opinion and commentary pieces by Latino/a/x experts and amplify their voices and ideas. CALÓ News strives to provide interesting, insightful and in-depth reporting focused on Latino/a/x communities. We cover Latino communities in California and are expanding to the Southwest, including Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona.

JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Southwest Editor to lead the development and execution of regional news content and audience growth strategies for a new Southwest news platform. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the southwestern region - especially Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona, a passion for local journalism, and a proven track record of driving digital audience engagement. This role will be responsible for creating hyperlocal content, building partnerships, and implementing strategies to grow monthly website traffic to 50,000 unique visitors in target regions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Content Development and Strategy

• Research, write, and edit high-quality, engaging news stories that resonate with audiences in Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona.
• Develop a content calendar focused on hyperlocal topics, including politics, culture, events, and community issues.
• Ensure all content is optimized for SEO, using region-specific keywords to drive organic traffic.

Audience Growth and Engagement

• Execute strategies to grow website traffic, including social media campaigns, email newsletter, and partnerships with local organizations.
• Collaborate with the marketing consultant to create geo-targeted advertising campaigns and promotional materials.
• Monitor analytics to track performance and adjust strategies to meet traffic goals.

Partnerships and Community Outreach

• Build and maintain relationships with local media outlets, influencers, and community organizations to amplify content reach.
• Represent the brand at local events, conferences, and networking opportunities.
• Explore syndication opportunities to distribute content on regional platforms.

Team Collaboration

• Work closely with writers, photographers, and videographers to produce multimedia content.
• Coordinate with the social media team to ensure consistent and engaging content promotion across platforms.
• Provide guidance and feedback to freelance contributors.

Innovation and Trends

• Stay updated on regional news trends, audience preferences, and digital media innovations.
• Experiment with new content formats (e.g., video, podcasts, interactive features) to engage the target audience.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
• Strong editing and proofreading skills
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
• Experience working in the Latino/a/x media sector
• Experience with project management and/or team leadership skills is a plus
• Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field preferred
• Copy-editing skills and narrative editing skills
• Managerial experience working with freelance writers
• Established relationships with freelance writers preferred
• Deep knowledge of the southwestern region, including its culture, politics, and key issues
• Exceptional attention to detail, content creation and management skills
• Proficiency in SEO, Google Analytics, and social media platforms
• Experience with content management systems (CMS) and digital publishing tools
• Ability to handle both editing and administrative tasks
• Minimum of 2 years experience with Latinx media is a required

LOCATION

Must reside in Albuquerque (NM). Requires ability to work remotely and on-site when needed.
