What are the responsibilities and job description for the Bilingual Victim Advocate position at The Laurel Center?
Job purpose
1. Provide full continuum of services to the Limited English Proficient.
2. Provide support groups that enhance the recovery of domestic and sexual violence victims.
3. Provide crisis intervention and support to hotline callers.
4. Plan, implement and maintain programs for community victims affected by domestic and sexual violence.
5. Provide criminal justice support on a regular basis to Winchester/Frederick and Clarke County courts.
6. Provide outreach services to the Latina population.
Duties and responsibilities
Client Services:
1. Offer education based short term crisis counseling to victims of domestic and sexual violence both individually and in group settings.
2. Provide crisis intervention and educational services to victims of domestic and sexual violence and their families at the hospital of forensic examination and/or child Safe Center upon request.
3. Provides the following services to victims in the criminal justice system.
a. Preparing the victim for court proceedings
b. Act as a liaison between the court and the victim
c. Brief victims about legal remedies
d. Provide emotional support.
Service Coordination/Outreach:
1. Cooperate in local efforts to assist victims of domestic and sexual violence.
2. Offer technical assistance, and consultation to local allied professionals on the issues of domestic and sexual violence.
3. Provide in-service training to allied professionals on the issues of domestic and sexual violence and the services available through the local domestic and sexual violence program.
4. Foster community relations and promote and visibility of the program through participation with other community-based service organizations and projects.
5. Speak before groups to promote program services and outreach to victims who have not yet disclosed their abuse.
Other Duties:
1. Provide “on call” services as needed to maintain 24-hour hotline.
2. Maintain accurate records of all activities that are necessary for program evaluation and monitoring. Assist with Completion of quarterly and final reports.
3. Maintain confidentiality of all information received through work at The Laurel Center.
4. Provide crisis intervention to survivors on the hotline and in a hospital setting.
5. Work closely with other agencies to maintain a flow of communication.
6. Maintain accurate and complete records and statistics on all clients and services provided and enter into the VADATA program promptly.
7. Compile monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual reports as assigned.
8. Attend staff meetings and consultation meetings.
9. Check voice mail regularly as well as the Family Violence hotline for messages and returns all calls.
10. Other duties as assigned by the DV Coordinator, SA Coordinator or Executive Director.
Works Closely with: All domestic and sexual violence staff
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in social work or related field plus three years of related experience in the human service field or an acceptable combination of education and experience. Knowledge of the issues of domestic and sexual violence.
