The Laurel Center is dedicated to making a positive impact on our community by providing essential services to support survivors of domestic and sexual violence. In 2020 The Laurel Center introduced an Economic Empowerment Program to assist survivors of domestic and sexual violence to gain living wage employment. Multiple studies have shown providing these services and allowing the individual to obtain education or training increases the likelihood of attaining economic self-reliance and ultimately long-term safety and security.
Position Summary
The Empowerment Program is seeking a Career Coach. This role provides respectful, personal and motivating services that empower our clients to be successful in their pursuit of education and employment. Additionally, you will be responsible for the safe and reliable transport of TLC clients in the Workforce Development Program.
Essential Tasks
- Assessing shelter residents and other individuals receiving services from TLC for potential entry into TLC’s Workforce Development Empowerment Program.
- Perform assessments of basic job skills, assist participants to overcome personal barriers and set measurable goals for education and employment that match each participants needs. Provide support to participants in career preparedness training that will enhance the clients ability to sustain permanent employment.
- Work with the Workforce Development Program Coordinator to establish and coordinate relationships with local employers to develop work placement sites for participants and identify and create program resources that are helpful to TLC’s Empowerment Program.
- Foster community relations and promote the visibility of the program through participation with other community-based services organizations and projects. Speak before groups to promote program services and outreach to those who are unaware of TLC programs.
- Act as a liaison and advocate for clients with community service providers.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of activities including VADATA entry.
- Safely transport participants to/from training or work using agency vehicle.
Qualifications
- An acceptable combination of experience and education in a human service or related field. Prior experience as a Career Coach preferred.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work as part of a team.
- Valid Virginia driver’s license, with clean driving record required.
- Knowledge of domestic violence and its impact on the survivor and family preferred.
- Knowledge of community service agencies.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Bilingual a plus.
