The Montgomery County Public Defender Office is now accepting applications for the position of Investigator. Our office is made up of attorneys, social workers, investigators, client engagement staff, administrative assistants, and a paralegal. We handle every aspect of indigent criminal defense across juvenile, misdemeanor, felony, and appellate divisions. Our office is committed to seeking and sustaining a culturally diverse staff with expertise and interest in serving our indigent clientele who come to us with diverse needs, backgrounds, ethnicities, and abilities to yield better results for our clients and our office.
The Office is seeking a self-motivated individual to assist attorneys with client and witness interviews, discovery gathering, and help with case preparation for trial. The ideal candidate should have a demonstrated dedication to indigent defense, strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently.
Job Duties:
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
· Meets with the attorney to discuss the facts of the case and requested investigative measures;
· Assist attorneys in preparation for and presentation at trial;
· Interview defendants, both in custody and out, to determine potential witnesses and theory of the case;
· Perform background investigations, locate witnesses, conduct interviews, obtain written statements, and write unbiased reports;
· Take photographs of crime scenes, collect and properly maintain potential evidence
· Serve subpoenas;
· Testify to evidence collected, interviews conducted, and reports written;
· Working knowledge of computers, smart phones, and other technology, as well as social media networks;
· Comfortable working alone, outside of the office, conducting investigations/interviews in all socio-economic parts of Dayton and its surrounding region, and interacting with individuals of very diverse backgrounds;
· Perform all other duties as assigned by the Public Defender or Deputy Director.
Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice, or equivalent experience. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and/or experience working in the non-profit or public sector is preferred. An ideal candidate will have 1-3 years’ experience using investigative techniques and procedures. They will also exercise sound judgement and decision-making ability and be capable of handling sensitive information.
A well-qualified candidate will have the ability to develop and maintain skills in time management and organization, as well as work independently, but also be able to contribute to the team-based environment. A successful candidate is subject to a drug screen and fingerprint-based, criminal background check.
