What are the responsibilities and job description for the Writing Specialist position at The Lawrenceville School?
The Writing Specialist is responsible for implementing individualized academic support for Lawrenceville students facing academic challenges. The Specialist will collaborate with the Educational Support team, teaching faculty, and academic advisors to provide students with individualized, evidence-based instructional strategies to support their varied needs and integrate with the school's curriculum. The Specialist will establish a strong rapport with students and create targeted learning opportunities to nurture their academic growth.
Candidates must be able to work flexible hours to accommodate students' schedules. This includes both day and evening responsibilities.
Responsibilities:
- Provide individual instruction to identified students in the areas of grammar and essay writing.
- Monitor and document student growth and send weekly reports to students' academic advisors and the Director of Educational Support.
- Foster a positive and encouraging learning environment that promotes student confidence and growth.
- Stay updated on best practices in writing instruction and educational resources.
- Attend professional meetings as needed.
- Bachelor's degree (preferably a Masters) in English, Special Education, or a related field.
- Strong knowledge of a variety of writing programs and instructional methodologies.
- Demonstrated success in working with students with learning differences and/or academic challenges.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Highly proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and Google GSuite tools, as well as comfortable using technology and systems to document work with students. Demonstrated ability to learn and utilize departmental and school-wide tools and databases.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Operate efficiently, learn, and adapt quickly. Ability to manage ambiguity and proactively find solutions.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Ability to lift and push up to 20 lbs.
- Must be capable of using a visual display terminal with continuous wrist movement on a keyboard
- Uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines
- Required to talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms
- Able to work flexible hours to accommodate students' schedules. This includes both day and evening responsibilities.
