What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Camp Counselor position at The Legacy Arts Project?
Under the direct supervision of the Camp Coordinator, Camp Counselors are responsible for the general safety, and development, growth, and skill achievement of campers within their assigned group at LAP summer camp. Due to the intensity of the curriculum and activities, we are seeking highly motivated individuals with experience, who can work very well with youth and adult team members. The time commitment includes the 6 weeks of camp - June 23 through August 1, plus added time commitment for all pre and post camp hours (Staff orientation and training, Parent/camper orientation, and post-camp debriefing). Camp Counselors are part of a team of LAP Camp staff. All camp staff are supervised by the Camp Coordinator. Qualified applicants must demonstrate experience or a genuine desire to work with youth; strong communication skills, leadership experience, a positive and team-player attitude; flexibility; a sense of humor; energy and stamina. We are seeking highly motivated individuals who can handle a physically demanding work day, love to work outside and can work very will with others.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Pre-Camp Responsibilities
- Attend professional development sessions – orientation, teambuilding, and training
- Complete all pre camp requirements and paperwork (Child Abuse, Criminal and FBI clearances, LAP application and hiring process)
- Assist with set up of camp including completion of curriculum, decorating rooms, prepping Jr. counselors (youth)
Camp Responsibilities
- Help Camp Coordinator implement weekly schedule for assigned camp group
- Assist with facilitation of small and large group activities
- Facilitate getting group to all activities and meals on time;
- Help group clean up;
- Make each camper feel part of their group and the greater camp group;
- Anticipate problems before they happen; resolve conflicts; ensure safe environment for all participants – monitor camper attendance and presence; ensure that camp program guidelines, procedures and activities are adhered to; identify and respond to camper behavior issues
- Help campers make friends;
- Be on your feet all day;
- Recognize the sick, sad, or self-conscious child;
- Assist with camp management and monitoring
- Communicate with parents about campers’ experiences
- Report concerns to Camp Coordinator
- Serve as a role model for Jr. counselors; help guide Jr. counselors
- Assist in maintaining accurate camp records including camper attendance, evaluation data, jr. counselor sign-in sheets
- Ensure safe environment for all participants – monitor camper attendance and presence; ensure that camp program guidelines, procedures and activities are adhered to; identify and respond to camper behavior issues
- Help ensure site is kept clean and organized
- Be a motivating force that keeps kids engaged and excited about their projects; show a genuine interest in campers
Post Camp Responsibilities
- Attend post camp debriefing
- Assist with camp break-down
- All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
- Experience working with children and youth in an educational setting or youth development/youth programming setting, or in an out of school setting; ability to lead a small group of children
- Experience with project or program management; ability to lead, plan, organize and implement activities
- Ability to work as a member of a team
- Ability to accomplish tasks with little direct supervision
- Strong organizational and communication skills; ability to communicate complex concepts; excellent communication (verbal, written and listening), time management, organizational and problem-solving skills
- Experience resolving disciplinary issues
- Attentive to details; leadership experience; a positive and team-player attitude; highly organized; flexibility; a sense of humor; outgoing and sociable personality; energy and stamina
