Position: Staff Attorney based out of the Honolulu Office focusing on Fair Hosing Enforcement & Rental Housing. Responsibilities include advising and representing clients in Housing matters (including eviction defense and preservation of housing subsidies), Fair Housing enforcement (including administrative processes, state and federal court litigation and fair housing testing). In addition to client representation, Staff Attorneys participate in community engagement, outreach and education, statewide initiatives, and in and day–to-day oversight of non-attorney staff. Staff attorneys also engage and develop relationships and collaborations with a range of public and private community partners, including governmental agencies, and community-based organizations, to ensure integrative services and address systemic barriers facing the client community.
Qualifications:
  • Member in good standing of the Bar of the State of Hawai‘i or licensed to practice in another state and eligible to practice in Hawaii under Hawaii Rules of Professional Conduct rule 1.16 and willing to take the bar exam at the next available sitting.
  • The ideal candidate will have prior litigation experience and/or a demonstrated interest and willingness to engage in litigation (including legal research and writing and oral advocacy in court proceedings, mediations, and/or administrative proceedings);
  • Experience in housing and fair housing enforcement preferred, but not required;
  • Demonstrable commitment to social justice or experience working with disadvantaged and/or low-income population and survivors of domestic abuse strongly preferred.
  • Able to work collaboratively and maintain good working relationships with co-workers.
  • Culturally sensitive and able to work well with diverse, low-income populations.
  • Humility in working with colleagues and clients across the spectrum of diversity, including race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, immigrant status, religious identity, physical and mental disabilities, and/or limited English proficiency.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage a busy litigation practice, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks with attention to detail.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proof-reading skills, with ability to be detail-oriented
  • Able to work under pressure in an empathetic and professional manner.
  • Basic computer skills required. Familiarity with Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams), strongly preferred.

Compensation and Benefits: $58,472 - $76,506 commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits package includes $150/month law school student loan repayment, medical and dental insurance, 401K match, life insurance, long term care insurance, and long term disability insurance. We offer an extremely generous paid time off package which includes 21 days of vacation, 12 days of sick leave and 14 holidays a year. This position is currently hybrid; remote and in-office work based on a rotation schedule. Hybrid working condition is subject to change but likely to continue post-pandemic.
