The Legal Aid Society, the nation's oldest and largest social justice legal services organization, has immediate openings for dedicated, Training and Advocacy Center Coordinator in the Criminal Defense Practice. The Criminal Practice is the primary public defender in New York City, providing holistic, client-centered representation to over 200,000 people facing misdemeanor, felony, and homicide charges.

The Legal Aid Society Training and Advocacy Center ("the TAC"), aims to become the epicenter for innovation in legal defense training in the United States. Situated in 44,000 feet of space designed and equipped to host large scale trainings, the TAC has multiple breakout rooms, a moot court room, and classroom space. The Legal Aid Society will incorporate its renowned training structure, and diverse interdisciplinary resources developed over the course of the 150-year history of the Society to provide and support defense training. Relying on our experience, knowledge, and relationships, the TAC will support training nationwide.

The TAC Team will oversee the development of the TAC into a facility that is widely used for trainings and conferences by the Legal Aid Society, NYC defense offices, the Assigned Counsel Plan, and external trainers such as the National Association for Public Defense, the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, and State affiliates.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide day-to-day support for all TAC operations and trainings, including being on-site during any trainings to provide in person support as needed
  • Communicating requirements to attendees and responding to questions, including managing bookings, and ensuring that all inquiries for use of the TAC are responded to expeditiously
  • Coordinating with LAS staff to ensure that all volunteers and other attendees have building clearance and necessary information
  • Maintaining and updating the building entry log, tracking building passes, and ensuring that all participants for TAC events are able to enter the building
  • On site coordination of catering and set-up
  • Coordination of printing, IT, and other training needs
  • Assist with the development of systems for event bookings at the TAC
  • Support for NICE trainings - which will include but is not limited to scheduling NICE trainings, coordinating Litigation Assistant support, being onsite during trainings, ensuring that all trainees have access to the NICE portal and appropriate case information, other related support
  • Continuously learn about forms of bias in the workplace and demonstrate affirmative behaviors that support an inclusive work environment

  • QUALIFICATIONS

    Required qualifications :

  • Bachelor's degree preferred or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and work experience
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and organizational skills
  • Advanced user of Outlook, OneDrive, Teams, PowerPoint, and SharePoint for document management, collaboration, and workflow automation
  • Proficiency in computer, electronic data management and file sharing platforms, Microsoft Suite, and an ability and willingness to learn new software and technological platforms
  • Ability to work independently and in a team setting
  • Ability to multi-task

  • May or will require travel within NYC, across the five-borough region
  • Ability to lift 20 pounds on an occasional / routine basis
  • SALARY AND BENEFITS

    The salary range represents a good faith estimate of the range we expect to pay for this role. The actual salary offered may vary depending on many factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge, skills, and experience, as well as collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

    Salary Range : $65,000 - $70,000

    Higher Education and Loan Forgiveness

    The Legal Aid Society is a qualified employer for the purposes of the Public Service Loan Forgiveness. This position allows an employee to take advantage of PSLF and other State and Federal loan forgiveness programs.
