Redefining Education at Lighthouse Schools
Imagine a school where students don’t just study history—they analyze leadership strategies of great changemakers and debate real-world issues. A school where literature is more than just reading—it’s public speaking, storytelling, and persuasive writing that prepares students to lead. At Lighthouse Schools, America’s first Islamic male boarding school, we aren’t just imagining it—we’re making it happen.
We blend self-paced learning, project-based instruction, and in-person mentoring to create a dynamic, real-world education for our 8th-12th grade students. Our focus is on communication skills, critical thinking, and leadership development. If you believe that education should be hands-on, discussion-driven, and built on inquiry rather than memorization, this is your opportunity to mentor, coach, and innovate in a transformative learning environment.
Your Role
This is not a traditional teaching position. Instead of lectures and rigid lesson plans, you will be:
Workshop Design & Curriculum Development
- Developing high-impact humanities workshops for grades 8-12, including but not limited to Socratic seminars, public speaking, speechwriting, historical analysis, leadership studies, case studies of world leaders and their decision-making, essay writing, journalism, creative storytelling, philosophy and ethics in society.
- Designing real-world assessments that evaluate student engagement, communication, and critical thinking rather than standardized tests.
- Researching and incorporating primary sources, contemporary media, and historical case studies to keep workshops relevant and engaging.
Coaching & Mentorship
- Providing one-on-one coaching to help students refine their communication skills, historical arguments, and written work.
- Leading debate teams, Model UN-style simulations, speech coaching, and research-based discussions to prepare students for public speaking.
- Teaching students how to analyze media, write persuasively, and think critically about historical and contemporary issues.
- Creating an environment of inquiry and discussion, where students feel confident questioning, exploring, and debating ideas.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
- Working closely with educators, facilitators, and guest speakers to design and deliver impactful workshops.
- Connecting history, literature, and philosophy with entrepreneurship, leadership, and real-world problem-solving.
- Building strong relationships with students and parents to help students take ownership of their learning and personal growth.
What You Will NOT Be Doing
- Lecturing students while they passively take notes.
- Teaching from outdated textbooks without real-world connections.
- Assigning busywork instead of engaging, skill-based projects.
- Evaluating students based on memorization rather than analysis and expression.
What We’re Looking For
- A track record of high achievement in academics, leadership, debate, journalism, public speaking, history, or the humanities.
- A passion for coaching and mentorship—you must be able to engage, inspire, and connect with students.
- Excellent communication skills—both for leading workshops and mentoring students.
- Experience designing humanities-based content such as workshops, discussion guides, or project-based learning experiences.
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field (English, History, Communications, Political Science, or related disciplines).
- A willingness to work in-person at Lighthouse Schools in Clinton, Iowa.
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S. (No visa sponsorship available).
Why Join Lighthouse Schools?
- Innovative, student-centered education—we focus on real-world skills, discussion-based learning, and leadership development.
- Competitive salary & professional growth—we invest in our educators and believe in lifelong learning.
- Access to cutting-edge technology & resources—use AI, interactive media, and digital tools to transform education.
- A mission-driven environment—be part of a team dedicated to shaping future changemakers.
