JOB SUMMARY
The Supervisor, Recreation and Leisure Activities (Surf/Wave Pool) is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the surf and wave pool experience at The LineUp at Wai Kai. This leadership role ensures exceptional guest experience by maintaining high operational standards, supervising staff, monitoring water quality, ensuring proper functioning of the Citywave system, and enforcing safety protocols.
In addition to managing surf and wave pool operations, this position provides cross-training and supervisory support for AquaVenture and the Lagoon, ensuring seamless guest service across all water-based recreation activities. The supervisor will also handle general team management responsibilities, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, payroll, and team communications, as well as monitoring attendance, conduct, and performance.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Recreation and Leisure Activities Surf/Wave Pool
- Oversee daily operations of the surf and wave pool, ensuring a smooth and safe guest experience.
- Supervise and manage staff, including hiring, training, scheduling, and performance management.
- Manage team communications and conduct regular meetings to align on safety, operations, and guest service expectations.
- Administer payroll processes, including reviewing time records and approving schedules.
- Ensure daily checklists, records, logs, inventory and maintenance is completed.
- Ensure proper scheduling and staffing levels to meet operational demands.
- Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment that encourages staff engagement and development.
Safety & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, injury procedures, and reporting, as outlined in the Operations Manual.
- Supervise, train, and evaluate Water Safety Attendants and support staff.
- Conduct regular safety audits and work with the team to implement corrective actions as needed.
- Train and enforce proper emergency response procedures for all surf and wave pool activities.
- Ensure Water Safety Attendants maintain active certifications and adhere to established safety standards.
- Work closely with the Facilities and Maintenance teams to identify and address safety hazards in the surf/wave pool area.
Surf Equipment & Maintenance
- Manage the fleet of surf and safety equipment, ensuring regular maintenance, proper upkeep, and timely replacements.
- Report operational or technical issues to the maintenance team and follow up on necessary repairs.
- Coordinate with vendors and oversee ordering of new equipment as required to maintain high-quality guest experience.
- Organize and facilitate demo days with local shapers to enhance the guest experience.
Cross-Training & Multi-Activity Support
- Provide cross-training and supervisory support for AquaVenture and Lagoon operations, rotating staff between locations to optimize scheduling and guest service coverage.
- Collaborate with AquaVenture/Lagoon supervisors to ensure staff are adequately trained across all water-based activities.
Guest Experience & Surf Instruction
- Lead and support surf instruction sessions
- Uphold exceptional guest service standards, responding to guest inquiries and resolving issues in a timely manner.
- Work with the marketing team to promote recreational activities and drive guest engagement.
- Manage the daily reservations system- ensure waivers are confirmed, consolidate and close sessions as needed, create/cancel bookings, promote additional upgrades to surf experience ie: coaching, rental board etc.
Other Duties & Responsibilities
- Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned to support and enhance the overall success of the Recreation and Leisure Activities Department.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2 years of experience in surf park, surf program, or water recreation operations.
- Previous experience managing staff in a hospitality, sports, or recreation setting.
- Aquatic safety knowledge.
- Lifeguard Certification and CPR, First Aid, AED training required.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and scheduling/payroll systems.
- An undergraduate degree preferred (or a combination of relevant education and experience).
- Basic mechanical and troubleshooting knowledge of water systems (Citywave experience preferred).
- Ability to remain calm and act decisively in emergency situations.
QUALIFICATIONS/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be fluent in oral and written English.
- Must be competent at surfing and familiar with Hawaiis waterman culture.
- Availability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays. Flexible schedule required, particularly around special events and holidays.
- Prolonged periods outdoors, standing, walking, bending, and kneeling.
- Ability to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
