Job Description

The Linux Foundation is looking for a Senior Director of Marketing to develop and execute on strategic marketing initiatives to support the CNCF. This individual will play a key leadership role within both CNCF and The Linux Foundation.

This role provides an opportunity to be the marketing leader for the CNCF, supporting one of the world’s largest open source communities. You’ll be responsible for developing the marketing framework for the CNCF, overseeing a team of marketing and communications professionals and supported by an expanded team of creative, event and content professionals. This individual will work closely with the foundation leadership team, general board and marketing committee.

New and amazing stories of innovation, creativity and community come to us every week. Your expertise will help to tell these stories to a wide audience, drive engagement in developer communities, spread knowledge of cool new releases, generate media coverage for regional and national events, and promote training and certification on new technologies.

Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

Define and Track Success Metrics

Establish, monitor, and report on key KPIs across campaigns, content, events, and membership growth (e.g., MQLs, engagement rates, attendance, sponsorship revenue, ROI).

Develop and Execute Marketing Strategy

Lead CNCF’s integrated marketing and communications strategy, balancing top, middle, and bottom-of-funnel activities to drive awareness, engagement, and conversions.

Manage and optimize the CNCF marketing budget to deliver impactful campaigns and events.

Team Leadership and Development

Oversee and mentor marketing teams (CNCF staff, LF services, and contractors), fostering accountability, collaboration, and professional growth.

Event Strategy and Execution

Event Planning and Management

Collaborate with the LF events team to conceptualize, plan, and execute high-impact events that drive attendance, engagement, and sponsorship opportunities.

Lead vision and strategy for events. Identify compelling speakers and topics to enhance attendee experience

Event Campaigns and Sponsorship Engagement

Design and execute campaigns to maximize event registrations and sponsorships.

Work with the central marketing and events teams to align messaging and outreach for CNCF’s flagship and community events.

Content and Messaging

Audience-Centric Content Strategy

Develop and maintain audience personas to guide the creation of impactful content, including user stories, tutorials, case studies, webinars, and presentations.

Ensure all content supports CNCF’s strategic objectives and resonates with technical and business audiences.

Performance Optimization

Analyze content performance metrics to refine strategies, ensuring high engagement and measurable outcomes.

Developer and Community Messaging

Tailor messaging for developer audiences and community stakeholders to build trust, credibility, and advocacy.

Campaigns and Engagement

Demand Generation and Campaigns

Design and execute targeted campaigns, including ABM initiatives, to drive member acquisition, event attendance, and community growth.

Partner with CNCF leadership to align campaigns with strategic goals, including membership sales and renewals.

Stakeholder and Community Engagement

Member and Community Relationships :

Build trust-based relationships with CNCF members and community stakeholders to enhance engagement and collaboration.

Serve as the primary liaison to CNCF’s marketing committee, co-leading initiatives to foster member participation and satisfaction.

Cross-Functional Collaboration :

Work closely with leadership, LF counterparts, and CNCF teams (education, community, research, and events) to ensure cohesive and aligned marketing efforts.

Measurement and Reporting

Data-Driven Decision Making

Regularly report on marketing and event performance metrics, leveraging insights to optimize campaigns and inform strategic planning.

Demonstrate ROI through robust reporting, ensuring alignment with CNCF’s goals.

Qualifications

12–15 years of experience in marketing and communications, preferably in technical or B2B environments, with a proven track record of driving measurable results through multi-channel campaigns.

Deep knowledge of cloud and infrastructure technologies; container-specific expertise and familiarity with the open-source ecosystem are highly desirable.

Strong skills in crafting compelling messaging for technical and business audiences, with experience developing effective communication strategies for complex technical topics.

Expertise in integrated marketing strategies, including aligning paid media, content marketing, email, events, and demand generation campaigns to drive cohesive results.

Demonstrated success in engaging global developer communities and creating campaigns that resonate with technical audiences, particularly software developers.

Proven ability to conceptualize and execute events, including speaker recruitment, sponsorship engagement, and attendee experience.

Exceptional project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple initiatives effectively.

Experience building trust-based relationships with internal teams, external stakeholders, and community members.

Strong collaboration, leadership, and team mentoring skills, with a growth mindset and adaptability.

Additional Information

Salary $146,000 - $183,000 USD.
