Overview
The Executive Director (ED) will serve as the key leader for Literacy Volunteers of Coconino County (LVCC) / The Literacy Center, overseeing all aspects of the organization’s operations. The ED will work closely with the Board of Directors to set long-term goals and ensure their achievement through strategic planning and execution. Key responsibilities include operational and fiscal management, staff oversight, fundraising, donor development, event planning, communications, public relations, marketing, organizational development, and program oversight.
Work Expectation
This is a full-time position (40 hours/week), with occasional evening hours required for community events and activities.
Compensation
$60,000 - $70,000, based on experience and qualifications. Benefits include paid holiday and seasonal time off (1 week at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, 1 week for Spring Break, and 2 weeks in July), plus all government holidays.

Qualifications
- Advanced degree in an education-related field.
- Leadership experience in non-profit management is preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proven experience in successful grant writing and fundraising.
- Familiarity with event planning and donor cultivation.
- Proficiency with software tools such as Excel, Publisher, QuickBooks (desktop), database management, and WordPress is a plus.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operations & Fiscal Management
- Oversee daily operations, including the supervision of all programs.
- Manage the organization's finances, ensuring a balanced budget and adherence to AICPA standards for non-profit accounting.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with funding sources.
- Prepare annual budget and reports.
- Develop strategies to secure the organization’s financial future.
- Supervise the Program Director, Office Manager, Child & Youth Program Coordinator, and Legal Service Coordinator.
- Ensure compliance with all rules, regulations, and laws governing 501(c)(3) organizations.
2. Program Oversight & Development
- Collaborate with the Program Director to ensure all existing programs evolve to meet community needs.
- Key programs include adult education offerings such as ESL (in-person and Zoom), GED prep, citizenship practice, computer literacy, financial literacy workshops, and more.
- Oversee and support the development of new programs to address emerging educational needs.
- Ensure the continued success and growth of the Raising Readers program, an intensive reading intervention initiative for 1st-3rd graders, in partnership with Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD).
- Oversee the Northern Arizona Immigration and Legal Services (NAILS) program, ensuring continued DOJ accreditation, malpractice insurance, and that required subscriptions (e.g., CLINIC) remain up to date.
- Respond to emerging community needs by researching, developing, and implementing programs. This will include writing grants and identifying and hiring personnel to support these initiatives.
3. Fundraising & Donor Development
- Nurture and maintain relationships with existing donors.
- Develop outreach strategies for acquiring new donors and funding sources.
- Oversee grant writing and follow-up.
- Ensure timely and meaningful donor recognition.
- Lead fundraising efforts, including identifying potential major donors.
- Create and implement donor recognition programs and giving levels.
- Maintain an updated donor database.
- Collaborate with the board and fundraising committees to review and refine strategies.
- Seek major donor prospects to present to board members for solicitation.
4. Event Planning
- Lead the planning and execution of fundraising events.
- Collaborate with committees and volunteers to develop promotional materials and event strategies.
- Propose innovative ideas for improving events and fundraising efforts.
5. Media & Communications
- Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization.
- Write and distribute press releases as needed.
- Produce and distribute a monthly electronic newsletter via MailChimp.
- Manage and maintain the organization’s website and social media channels.
- Provide communication support to board members, including talking points for public engagements.
6. Public Relations & Marketing
- Increase LVCC’s visibility in the community through outreach and engagement.
- Foster relationships with local business leaders and philanthropic organizations.
- Seek opportunities for partnerships and collaborations with local entities.
7. Board Relations
- Attend all board and committee meetings, providing administrative support (minutes, agendas, follow-up).
- Assist in the orientation, training, and ongoing education of board members.
- Keep the board informed on key organizational issues.
8. Organizational Development
- Collaborate with the board to develop organizational goals and strategies that align with the mission.
- Monitor personnel and board policies to ensure alignment with best practices.
- Assist in recruiting and training new board members.
- Identify professional development opportunities for staff and board members.
Reporting StructureThe Executive Director reports directly to the Board of Directors, providing regular updates on the organization’s progress and financial health.
