Position Information
LARPD is seeking a summer intern to support summer camps within the Community Services Department. Applicants should have the equivalent of one year of college credits completed toward a degree. Preference will be given to candidates who have some experience working with youth ages 5-16 with special needs. Interested candidates should complete an application online. The intern will be responsible for key deliverables while learning about special districts and the Livermore community. The position is a seven week assignment which includes one week off from June 30 through July 4. Travel between South Lake Tahoe and Livermore, CA, with flexible hours are required. The pay rate is $20.00 per hour.
Key Duties
- Oversee up to 20 campers in an outdoor setting.
- Provide a physically, socially, and emotionally safe environment for all participants and staff.
- Project confidence, enthusiasm, fun, and inclusiveness.
- Assist camp staff in leading age-appropriate and engaging hikes, games, crafts, and discussions.
- Plan, organize, and evaluate curriculum and activities.
- Exhibit understanding and patience when working with campers from diverse backgrounds.
Program Specific Duties
Destination Camp Shelly in South Lake Tahoe
- Three-night, four-day camping adventure in South Lake Tahoe at Camp Shelly.
- Staff will sleep in a provided tent and spend 4 full days, Monday - Thursday, with 1113-year-old campers.
- Drive supply vehicle to and from Tahoe and Livermore. We will provide the vehicle and gas.
- Work long days with breaks, potentially overtime.
- Support leads in daytime activities, including hiking 5 miles and swimming at the lake.
- Support leads in activities and logistics at camp, including managing campfires and campfire activities; planning, making, and cleaning up breakfast, lunch, and dinner; supervising downtime activities like volleyball, games, etc.
- Travel up and back as part of the program, for 4 days/3 nights at a time, 3 weeks over the summer. We will provide a tent and food for the week.
Counselor in Training
- Weeklong day camp at Sycamore Grove Park in Livermore, CA.
- Camp runs 9:00 am 3:00 pm, staff hours are 8:30 am 3:30 pm, Monday Friday.
- Encourage campers to develop public speaking, leadership, team building, and conflict resolution skills.
Key Deliverables
- A training plan for camp staff to better understand best practices in working with children with special needs.
- Protocols to be followed when a situation arises with a child and the steps to take.
- A template for a behavior plan to include goals and actions.

Timing & Hourly Pay
- June-August 9th. Interns may start and end later but need to be present for the core sessions slated for the entire month of June, July, and through August 9th.
- Work hours will depend on the camp. Destination Shelly will be Monday Thursday, approximately 8 am 10 pm with breaks. Counselor in Training will be Monday Friday 8:30 am 3:30 pm. Specific schedule available on request.
- The pay rate will be $20 per hour.
Pre-employment Conditions
- Successful completion of a Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
- Undergo a TB test as a condition of employment.
- Possession of a Class C license and willingness to drive a supply vehicle to and from Camp Shelly in South Lake Tahoe.
- At the time of appointment, and maintained throughout employment, possession of:
- California Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record.
- American Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
