Job Description:
SUMMARY:
The Transportation Management Specialist I perform tasks such as program planning, program evaluation, and technical advisory assignments that require the application of basic knowledge of traffic management principles and technical traffic functions. Provides assistance to the Traffic.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the daily department priorities and work outlined in transportations SOPs and the PWS.
- Uses DSS, WMS, and other Government Data Systems to perform the requirements in the PWS.
- Assists and performs other relevant duties as assigned.
- Schedules and coordinates carrier pick-up and delivery of freight.
- Coordinates a variety of administrative duties essential to the management of the transportation office.
- Coordinates freight shipments and transportation support functions.
- Uses a variety of office automation technology to accomplish assignments.
- Completes, verifies and processes all documentation associated with the shipments.
- Plans, coordinates, and controls shipment of material and equipment. Prepares shipment documentation for material and equipment shipped to include hazardous materials.
- Provides advice and assistance to customers concerning all aspects and phases of the DLA Distribution Depot transportation and distribution functions. Provides status resolves problems, prepares reports, and traces shipment upon requests.
- Determines the most efficient economical rates and routes to destination involving domestic outbound and export shipments.
- Performs the classification, rating, routing, and movement of a wide range of commodities, which includes hazardous materials.
- Plans shipping dates, material pick up and loading times of equipment and material to be shipped from DLA Distribution Depot to other government activities, both overseas and CONUS.
- Verifies transportation costs and contacts carriers.
- Determines economical routing based on the technical review of guides and tariffs.
- Reviews automated documentation for all types of shipments taking appropriate action to correct any invalid, void, or missing information.
- Schedule/confirm delivery appointments utilizing CAS.
- Performs daily filing of shipping documents; turn in shipping documents to DACs- RM for scanning on a daily delivery schedule.
- Verify information on DD1348/DD1149 and visually inspect the material to identify and
induct/transship information into DSS.
- Performs freight shipment and transportation support functions.
- Initiates freight release creates vehicle load orders for a variety of modes and recommends changes in routing and or mode of transportation for more economical rates to meet required delivery dates.
- Maintains equipment control to assure that the equipment arrives, is loaded, and dispatched within the specified time frames.
Requirements:

- No Direct Supervisory Responsibilities.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Minimum requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain an active Secret Security Clearance
- Strong communication skills
- Must be computer literate.
- Ability to multitask and demonstrate attention to detail.
- Must be reliable, responsible, and able to fulfill obligations.
- Self-starter: able to quickly learn new concepts and operate with limited supervision
- Possess a Valid California driver’ License.
- Two (2) years experience utilizing Distribution Standard System (DSS), WMS, or equivalent.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read, comprehend and explain instructions, letters, memos, emails, and correspondence from inside the organization as well as from external sources. Ability to effectively respond, communicate and present information to customers, internal and external, clients and other employees in the organization. Ability to interpret instructions and information and explain to others in the performance of this job in English.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Required to walk, stand, sit and move about the property for long periods of time. Perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms and legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling material. Working at elevated heights. Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS:
Job is performed indoors and outdoors and will be exposed to prevailing weather conditions. Exposure to uncomfortable chemical odors such as automobile gas, automobile exhaust, paint, welding debris. The noise level in the work environment may vary from moderate to high, depending on location. Will work a 40-hour work week.
EXPECTATIONS:
Must be a U.S. citizen. Reliable transportation to/from work is a necessity. Must be able to maintain proper state registration, proof of insurance, and a valid driver's license to operate Privately Owned Vehicles (POV) on a military installation. As a condition of employment, must have acceptable background check results and pass a pre-employment drug screening. This position may be subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing on an unannounced basis. Employee is expected to dress appropriately and be punctual for their shift.
