Job Summary
The Peer Recovery Support Specialist utilizes their lived experience with the healing process of recovery from psychiatric, traumatic, and/or substance use challenges to offer assistance and support to promote other peers on their own recovery path. The Peer Recovery Specialist has or will be trained and certified to assist others in initiating and maintaining long-term recovery and enhancing the quality of life for the individuals they work alongside.
Essential Functions
- Provide ongoing support of clients and encourage involvement in community-based activities, recovery activities, work, exercise, etc.
- Actively engage with clients, developing positive relationships that support the client in meeting their goals
- Help clients identify their abilities, strengths and assets and offer motivation
- Assist and or develop self-directed recovery action plans with clients and offer motivation and accountability
- Provide peer-to-peer support and facilitate individual sessions
- Attend weekly/monthly staff meetings
- Complete accurate documentation on each client in a timely manner
- Comply with data privacy, vulnerable adult, and HIPAA regulations
- Provide support group meetings and activities sometimes on evenings or weekends as need be
- Provide transportation to appointments and meetings, as needed

- Maintain ongoing, current, and required training for best practice service delivery
- Work collaboratively with all other organizational services and team members
- Engage in community outreach activities and documentation
- Responsible for obtaining and/or maintaining proper licensure and/or certification according to specific state requirements
- Other tasks as assigned (to be discussed at interview)
Physical Requirements
Works in various community environments (homes, hospitals, emergency rooms, group homes, assisted living facilities) and in an office setting, with exposure to potentially combative and hostile clients. Work requires frequent moving from one area to another, including use of company vehicles, answering pages, and coordinating and communicating with other staff persons in various disciplines and agencies. May transport clients to placement when appropriate to facilitate the transition.
Education, Experience and Certifications.
Has a primary diagnosis of mental illness or substance use disorder AND be in recovery for a minimum of 2 years
High School diploma or GED required. Successful completion of Certified Peer Support Training Program within 6 months of hire. Maintains peer support certificate per state standards. Must have good therapeutic communication skills. Ability and willingness to work as a team member. Must have good communication skills and the ability to read and write. Must have computer skills sufficient to document in an electronic medical record. Must complete defensive driving class annually.
