Job Overview:
Safety- School Custodians abide by institutional and governmental guidelines regarding procedures and safety measures, such as school drills, fire alarm, building inspections, appliance maintenance, keeping cleaning products away from children. If they are the first to arrive in the morning or the last to leave at night, they are in charge of unlocking and/or locking doors. School custodian must be certified in school safety and as a fire drill coordinator. The custodian will keep a lookout for potential problems, such as cracked sidewalks or faulty chairs.
Job Responsibilities:
Cleaning- Sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, washing windows, scrubbing tables and desktops, emptying trash cans and recycle bins, sanitizing washrooms, and ensuring the availability of necessary supplies throughout the day. Besides aesthetics, the goal is also to reduce the spread of germs and keep pests away.
Setting up the building for special events and meetings.
Grounds upkeep- Removing debris from school grounds, raising the US flag, Reporting major maintenance needs to the appropriate personnel. Responding to emergency situations, such as spills or facility damage
Maintenance- When a light bulb needs to be changed, a window unstuck, a soap dispenser filled, a ceiling tile replaced or a coat of paint added, the School Custodian takes the lead. Depending on their level of knowledge, they also may perform services on pipes, heaters, air conditioners and wiring. Will maintain heating and cooling thermostats; perform special assignments such as shoveling snow before school starts. When third party repair people are called in, the custodian will guide them to the proper place and/or explain the problem.
Assisting staff- Teachers and administrators may ask School Custodians to perform tasks such as moving furniture, fixing broken lockers, unloading deliveries, and handling an unexpected spill.
Qualifications:
Cleaning experience- Janitorial or custodial experience preferred- Knowledge of floor care techniques- Experience in commercial cleaning practices- Familiarity with industrial cleaning methods- Ability to perform maintenance tasks- Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently- High school diploma or equivalent- Ability to work independently and as part of a team- Good communication skills and ability to follow instructions- Physical ability to perform job duties, including lifting and moving equipment.
Experience:
Relevant: 1 year (Preferred)
Certifications: Have or Willing to Obtain FDNY Certificate of Fitness- D20 Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor For NYC K-12 Nonpublic Schools (Premise Related)
