Communications Officer, Grants & Advocacy

Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs Program (CYSHCN)

MAIN FOCUS :

You will lead the grantmaking and advocacy team's communications activities targeting professional, academic, and lay audiences to elevate the work of the CYSHCN program, and its grantees and partners, to transform the health care system to better serve children and adolescents with the greatest health needs.

LOCATION :

Palo Alto, CA (hybrid); the successful candidate for this role will be based in the Bay Area.

WHAT YOU'LL DO...

The Communications Officer, reporting to the Executive Director, will develop and execute communications strategies and products in support of the CYSHCN program and its grantees and partners. This work includes developing print and digital products for multiple audiences, including researchers, professionals, advocates, policymakers, health care providers, and families, as well as supporting virtual and in-person events. In addition, the Communications Officer will provide strategic direction and generate content for both the CYSHCN newsletter and web pages. This role will also serve as a key liaison to the Foundation's strategic communications content team to ensure the priorities and impact of the CYSHCN program are featured in foundation-wide internal and external messaging, including Foundation board and committee materials.

The compensation range for this role is between $110k-$125k annually.

YOU'LL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR...

Lead and manage communications projects, representing a range of complexities, from conception through executionCreate a multi-year and annual communications plan that is aligned with and in support of our grantmaking efforts, grantee deliverables, and other related work, including recommendations for how to talk about our work, how to tailor for target audiences, and which audience(s) might be interested in specific workLead efforts to reimagine the CYSHCN newsletter to best serve our audiences and promote awareness of research and advances supported by our program and our partnersCreate, write, and edit engaging content and materials, or adapt grantee products, for the website, newsletter, and social mediaProactively recommend new ways to promote content and products developed by the Foundation and grantees, and seek out new opportunities and audiencesPrepare program committee and board materials such as talking points, PowerPoint decks, and summaries, as well as content to keep the committee and board engaged and informed between meetingsDevelop, manage, and monitor communications products for events (e.g. webinars, convenings, conferences), and other activities related to grantees, partners, key stakeholders, public officials, media, and other targeted audiencesDevelop strong relationships and coordinate efforts with the communications teams at grantee and partner organizations; serve as a thought partner and provide support with product development as needed (e.g. reviews and editing)Create communication materials and opportunities that position CYSHCN staff members as thought leadersEnsure monitoring and regular evaluation of the use and impact of the program's various engagement and communication activitiesMonitor forums, social media, and other sites whose activities can inform the work of the FoundationEnsure integration of the CYSHCN program in the Foundation's overall communications strategy and messagingYOU MUST HAVE...

Education : BA / BS or equivalent experience5-8 years of experience in journalism, communications, or writingProven ability to manage multiple projects with tight deadlines simultaneouslyExcellent storytelling, writing, proofreading, research and organizational skillsIT'S AN ADDED PLUS IF YOU HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH...

Experience in health or science writing to successfully translate complex content, and / or a public health approach to systems change, into compelling textA bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or writingExperience working in a nonprofit and / or philanthropic environmentExperience with Salesforce or other nonprofit database softwareProficiency with Adobe InDesignProficiency with Emma or other email marketing platformsYOU'LL BE SUCCESSFUL IF YOU'RE...
