The MacDuffie School seeks an enthusiastic music teacher for immediate hire.
Teaching responsibilities
- Teach beginning theory and world music courses for grades 6-12
- Teaching responsibilities include up to 25 classes per week (middle and upper school). The current configuration is listed below. Future course offerings may be tailored to the interests and abilities of the teacher.
- grade 6/7 (4x per week) - one quarter
- grade 8 (4x per week) - one quarter
- middle school chorus (4x per week) - one semester
- middle school band (4x per week) - one semester
- high school chorus (2x per week)
- high school music ensemble(2x per week)
- Music History and Appreciation (4x per week) offered this year 2024-2025 (offered in every other year rotation)
- Music Theory, Composition, and Recording (4x per week) offered in 2025-2026 (offered in every other year rotation)
- Guitar Skills (4x per week) - one semester
- Keyboard Skills (4x per week) - one semester
- Arts in Perspective - Music (4x per week) one quarter x 3 sections
- plan and organize lessons
- evaluate student progress on a regular basis
- assist in the development of the curriculum
- seek opportunities for professional development
Advisor Responsibilities
- advise a group of 6-8 students on various issues (currently middle school)
- serve as the first point of contact with parents
- prepare written comments each grading period
- attend parent-teacher conferences
Other Responsibilities
- Prepare student performers for winter and spring concerts
- Musical direction of the all-school Winter Musical production, including accompaniment at rehearsals
- Along with the other arts department teachers, plan and present the annual Red Carpet Art Awards, held at the end of the school year
- Teach MacDuffie songs to the whole school in assembly
- Coordinate the music and marching for graduation and other special events
- Be an active member of The MacDuffie community (attending morning meetings, assemblies, department and faculty meetings, etc.)
- Assist students in auditioning for District and All-State competitions and chaperone or recruit chaperones for students who are invited to participate
- Weekend duty roughly 6 times per year for approximately 2-4 hours to assist with the boarding program.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in the piano
- Knowledge or the desire to learn about the use of a music lab
- Strong background in choral music and the adolescent voice
- Flexibility
- Team player
Eligibility
- Bachelor’s Degree in music or equivalent professional experience required; Master’s Degree preferred
- 3-5 years choral conducting and general music teaching experience desired
