What are the responsibilities and job description for the Middle School Math Teacher position at The Manitou School?
The Manitou School is seeking a warm, flexible, passionate, progressive Middle School Math Teacher to join our teaching team. The ideal candidate will be committed to providing a supportive, engaging, and challenging learning environment that fosters students' love for mathematics and critical thinking.
Candidates must be comfortable in a co-teaching environment, collaborating with our other teachers and learning specialists on many things, including curriculum development, parent communication, and assessment. Well-qualified candidates will have a strong background in mathematics, including number theory, algebra, and geometry. They will have a strong constructivist approach and pedagogical background, allowing them to support students with in-depth exploration of mathematical concepts and the improvement of their problem-solving abilities. Manitou currently uses the Think Mathematics! curriculum for upper-elementary-level mathematics; Saxon Mathematics for 6th-8th grade-level mathematics; and offers Regents-level algebra and geometry to accelerated students.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Curriculum Development & Instruction:
- Design, plan, and implement math lessons that align with school standards and curriculum (grades 6-8).
- Provide differentiated instruction to meet the diverse needs of students, ensuring all learners have access to success.
- Utilize a variety of teaching strategies and resources to engage students and enhance their learning experience.
Student Assessment & Support:
- Regularly assess students’ understanding of math concepts through quizzes, tests, assignments, and informal assessments.
- Offer timely feedback to students and parents regarding progress and areas of improvement.
- Provide additional support to students who require extra help, through individual or small group instruction.
Classroom Management:
- Maintain a positive and respectful classroom environment conducive to learning.
- Foster a growth mindset, encouraging students to take risks, ask questions, and develop perseverance in problem-solving.
Collaboration & Professional Development:
- Work closely with other middle school teachers, counselors, and staff to create an interdisciplinary approach to student learning.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and stay current on educational best practices.
- Attend school meetings, conferences, and community events as required.
Communication:
- Regularly communicate with parents and guardians regarding student progress, needs, and classroom activities.
- Foster an open line of communication to ensure students' academic, social, and emotional needs are met.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Education, or a related field required.
- MA/ MS in Mathematics, Education or a related field preferred.
- NY State Teaching certification preferred
Experience:
- 3 years of teaching experience, especially in middle school or similar age groups
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of middle school mathematics curriculum and educational best practices.
- Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to inspire and motivate students of varying academic abilities.
- Skilled at communicating and collaborating with parents.
- Experience with narrative evaluations preferred.
- Commitment to professional growth and lifelong learning.
- Knowledge of Spanish language a plus/
- Desire to wear many hats within our school community and remain a dynamic asset to our small team.
