Assistant Superintendent
Summary: The Assistant Superintendent will support the Golf Course Superintendent in planning and executing routine maintenance operations and projects on the golf course. This role requires proficiency in turfgrass management, irrigation and water systems, and the application of fertilizers and pesticides. The ideal candidate must demonstrate effective communication skills, foster a positive attitude, and ensure a safe working environment. The Assistant Superintendent will carry out the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with exceptional attention to detail and a strong sense of urgency.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Provides assistance to the Golf Course Superintendent in all facets of daily operation; including diagnosing and reporting agronomic and personnel issues.
- Acts as Superintendent while on duty in the absence of the Golf Course Superintendent.
- Works as part of the team to ensure the golf course and grounds are setup and maintained to meet and exceed member expectations and satisfaction.
- Assists in the training, instruction, evaluation and supervision of the crew of up to 24 employees while working directly with fellow managers to achieve daily, weekly and monthly goals.
- Leads the team by example; provides guidance and assistance while ensuring work is completed as expected in a safe, timely manner and in accordance to state, local, and Club safety & environmental standards and policies.
- Maintains and directs repairs to the Rain Bird irrigation system; including programming/scheduling, general maintenance, repairs and troubleshooting.
- Performs or supervises the implementation of an overall turf health and IPM program through the use of best management practices (BMP) including aeration, topdressing, fertilizer & chemical applications, and moisture management.
- Operates an assortment of golf course equipment including, but not limited to, utility vehicles, sprayers, mowers, rollers, loaders, tractors, sod cutters, chainsaws, small engine tools, etc.
- Maintains clear records of pesticide applications, chemical & fertilizer inventory, irrigation and water use logs, staff paid time off use & requests, uniforms, and irrigation parts inventory.
- Regularly coordinates and communicates with the Equipment Manager to ensure all tools and equipment is in safe operating condition.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Directly supervises up to 24 employees in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training staff, planning, assigning and directing work; monitoring performance and conduct; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and communicating issues to the
Education and/or Experience: Associates degree or Certificate in related field with 1-2 years of industry experience; or three to four years of relevant work experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid driver’s license with a clean motor vehicle record (MVR). Must possess or be able to attain a Florida pesticide applicators license within 90-days.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze and interpret operating instructions, technical procedures, product labels and government regulations. Ability to write reports, emails and business correspondence, procedural instructions and bulletins. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups, coworkers, managers, members, guests and the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as product rates, proportions, percentages, ratios, area, circumference and volumes. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding and critical thinking to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, the individual should have experience with word processing and spreadsheet software, email and apps critical to the trade; knowledge of project management and job assignment software.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stand, walk, sit, stoop, twist, kneel, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to crouch, crawl, or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee is required to have good vision and hearing in order to operate equipment effectively.
