Data Analytics Curriculum Developer

The Marcy Lab School
Brooklyn, NY Contractor
POSTED ON 1/10/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 3/4/2025

At The Marcy Lab School, we provide a rigorous yet affordable college alternative that propels underestimated young people into the financially rewarding, purpose-driven tech careers of their dreams. We build the engineering expertise, critical thinking skills, leadership qualities, and network that our fellows need to become their best selves, serve their communities, and thrive within an evolving tech sector.

As a member of the Marcy Lab team, you are integral to this mission, as outlined in more depth below. This “Roles and Responsibilities” document aims to clearly define your role and prioritize your responsibilities while also articulating the goals you’ll work towards this year to best support Marcy Lab’s mission, your team’s collective efforts, and your own individual growth. In addition to the responsibilities and goals outlined below, we also expect that all members of the Marcy Lab team will approach their work staff, fellows, and partners in alignment with our Pillars of Character:

Humility

The smartest person in the room is the room, so we make space for others.

In some organizations, seniority and hierarchy determine which voices are heard. In these environments, ideas are stifled, and innovation stalls. At Marcy, moving with humility in our work means we acknowledge that our strongest ideas may not come from ourselves or our senior leaders but from anyone on our team. It allows us to take a step back to see ourselves as part of a whole, one that functions better simply because it is made up of experiences and knowledge of more than just a single individual. It puts less emphasis on positional power but on the idea itself.

Deliberateness

Go slow now to go far later.

We often say we are building the school we’d want for our children, which means we’re playing a long game. One where certain decisions can and will have an effect for years to come. It’s our privilege to hold this responsibility, and we do not take this job lightly.

That’s why we give each other the space and permission to be deliberate about our choices, bringing awareness and thoughtfulness to the impact of our actions. Sometimes being deliberate in our work means giving each other the grace to go slow to implement with precision, or sometimes, it looks like moving swiftly but with intention. However, in instances where deliberateness is threatened by speed, we’re not shy about our commitment to pause to make a measured choice. In certain cases, it will be encouraged.

At the heart of it, deliberateness requires forward planning. The conscious shift from a reactive state to a proactive one. In action, deliberateness is taking a beat at the top of a consequential meeting to take a few deep breaths.

Gratitude

We don’t take any success, learning opportunity, or contribution for granted.

At Marcy, we are thankful for every experience, person, and interaction that has come our way. To the executive who refused to hire our Fellows. Thank you. You pushed us to take a critical look at our curriculum and make it even better. To the first person who wrote us our first check. Thank you. You showed us what it looks like to feel supported. To the mentor who spends countless hours of their time ensuring our Fellows nail their first interview. Thank you.

From the good and not-so-good experiences we’re hit with daily, we’re grateful for every single one because they’ve helped us stay on our path, helped us evolve, and pushed us to reach our highest bar.

In action at Marcy, this looks like expressing appreciation for a team member’s work so they feel seen and valued. It’s evidenced in our practices of Mindful Mornings with our Fellows or Praise and Gratitude, which closes out our All Team Meetings each week.

At its core, gratitude is an expression of deep appreciation and is so deeply connected to our above value of humility—to get present and extend thanks.

Equity

We are responsible for using all we’ve been given to create opportunities for marginalized communities.

At our core, our work will always be grounded in honoring, supporting, and empowering the communities of color that have gotten us to where we are and who’ve gifted us their magic. Our team has since grown from just two, but this commitment will never change, and those who join our team—intentionally from a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences—take this stand right alongside us. It’s a non-negotiable.

Outside of our walls, many of the systems and spaces that our team and Fellows occupy were not created for them and were never intended to be havens for learning, exploring, or simply being. But inside our walls, it has and will always be our charge to center the voices and leaders who look like our Fellows.

In practice, equity at Marcy looks like thoughtfully choosing who to partner with to advance our mission, ensuring our team members at all levels of the organization reflect the communities we’re serving, and teaching each of our Fellows to pay it forward.

Transparency

We embrace openness to cultivate trust.

If we’re doing this right, our systems and culture inform and support each other. From day 1, we intentionally created systems that were radically transparent. For example, compensation for all team members is known company-wide, our organizational database houses documents that are accessible across all teams, and important decisions are shared for input and comments. It’s a daily commitment to openly holding ourselves accountable for the things we say, how we lead, and honoring our word. It builds trust in our team and in the company.

This also extends to our culture and way of working with each other. We privilege transparent and clear communication and often say the ‘hard things’ because we know our team can handle the truth. When paired with a responsibility to uphold respectful working relationships with each other, our ability to be open and transparent only leads to stronger ties of trust and care.
