Description

Purpose: 

The Collections Management Technician is responsible for supporting the stewardship and safekeeping of the Museum’s Collection, as well as the USS Monitor Collection. This position is focused on the maintenance and protection of the Collection. 


This is a full-time, exempt position with a salary of $42,000 and an excellent benefits package. No phone calls, please – only applicants being considered for interviews will be contacted.   


Duties:

  • Museum Collection
    • Responsible for housing all artifacts for storage and/or packing for transportation. 
    • Assist the department with coordinating Internal and external object viewing requests.
    • Assist the department with coordinating with Digital Services to fulfill their Photography work requests.
    • Coordinate with Conservation and Facilities to accomplish Artifact cleaning in the galleries.
    • Responsible for maintaining the safety, orderliness, and cleanliness of storage areas. 
    • Assist the Department manager with overseeing volunteers and interns.
    • Work with the Collections Management Technician to access and maintain gallery climate information from Dataloggers, and maintain records.
    • Responsible for assisting Exhibit Design and Conservation with exhibit installation and de-installation.
    • Assist the Registrar with making location changes as objects are accessioned and moved from storage to exhibition and back. 
    • Assist with special events and projects as assigned by the Department manager. 
  • USS Monitor Collection
    • The Technician is responsible for artifact cataloging in Proficio, creating and maintaining reference materials and permanent files, tracking artifact movements, and artifact labeling for USS Monitor objects.
    • Assist with photographic documentation.
    • Responsible for periodic inventories of the USS Monitor Collection.
    • Responsible for supporting the Director of Conservation and Chief Conservator with communication between USS Monitor Conservation, NOAA, and Mariners’ Museum Collections for audit purposes.
    • Maintain traceability for over 200 tons of federally governed artifacts.
    • Assist with the preparation of reports and paperwork.

Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Proficiency in all Microsoft products and Windows-based applications, including digital imaging software required.
  • The ability to multitask is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required in order to maintain complex record systems (both manual and computerized).
  • Must be a team player with excellent organizational skills and the ability to quickly adapt in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop is desirable.
  • Digital photography skills are required.

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History, Fine Arts, or other related field is required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in art or object handling within a Museum setting is preferred.
  • Experience in Re:Discovery and/or Proficio Collections Management software is preferred.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen prior to employment. 
  • Must be able to work various hours, including nights and weekends.
