If this sounds like you, the Montgomery County Department of Parks, Northern Parks Division, is the place you want to be! We are currently seeking multi-faceted, highly motivated individuals to fill the role of Parks/Facilities Maintenance Worker at South Germantown Recreational Park.
The South Germantown Management Area is comprised of 4.5 parks and stream valley units to include South Germantown Recreational Park, 3 local parks, 0.5 conservation parks a combination of 11 miles of natural and hard surface trails and 12 athletic fields. Under general supervision of a Park/Facilities Maintenance Leader the successful candidate will perform a variety of general park maintenance tasks such as playground repairs, grass mowing, trash removal, athletic field renovation and maintenance, trail maintenance, tree planting, pruning, and aftercare cleaning, repairing park buildings and structures while working with and occasionally leading teams of career and/or seasonal employees. The ideal candidate should possess skills to operate trucks, tractors with attachments, large riding mowers, loaders, and forklifts. Trade skills in carpentry and painting is a plus.

Examples of Important Duties
- Operating non-CDL vehicles and equipment including riding mowers, tractors with attachments, trucks, front-end- loader, backhoe.
- Performs general ground maintenance such as collecting, removing and disposing of litter and debris. Operates small blowers or vacuums. Performs reuse and recycle collections.
- General custodial duties including cleaning restrooms, meeting room set-ups, relocation of equipment and furniture, mopping, sweeping, stripping, and refinishing floors along with general repairs.
- Landscaping duties include spreading mulch and wood chips in playground areas, paths, around tree rings and landscape beds and other areas. Installing landscaping ties. Participating and assist in higher-level landscaping/gardening personnel with tree planting and maintenance.
- Athletic field maintenance includes operating tractor w/ attachment to rake, drag and grade fields. Also sprays pesticides.
- Performs maintenance and installation of park fixtures and furnishings.
- Responds to emergencies and inclement weather conditions such as hurricanes, blizzards, and earthquakes.
- Assist with transporting supplies and setting up special events.
- Provide general assistance to park visitors and assist with programs and events.
- Ability to communicate in another language a plus.
Important Skills and Characteristics:
- Knowledge of (1) routine work procedures, steps, and tasks to perform grounds maintenance, landscaping, trails maintenance, basic building maintenance, custodial work processes*; (2) applicable safety procedures*; (3) cleaning agents, procedures, and equipment*; and (4) Commission organization, policies and procedures*.
- Typically acquired or fully developed primarily after employment in this job class.
- Skill and ability to (1) operate hand and simple power tools and equipment, push and riding mowers, small trucks or vans; (2) understand a system of procedures; (3) provide courteous service; (4) perform manual work requiring physical effort and dexterity; and (5) perform First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).
- Skill in problem solving to select, organize and logically process relevant information (verbal, numerical or abstract) to solve a problem.
- Skill in communication to understand verbal and written information (including facts, descriptions and ideas) and to express such information so that others will understand. Examples include reading and writing routine materials and records.
- Interpersonal skills to interact effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships as a member of a team.
Working Conditions:
- Incumbent primarily works outside with a combination of office work occasionally or as assigned.
- Exposure to various elements and all types of weather conditions, waste, caustic chemicals, pesticides, wildlife, and potentially harmful insects (e.g.: bees, hornets, wasps etc.).
- Work requires constant kneeling, bending, twisting, lifting, and the ability to occasionally lift up to 100 pounds and regularly up to 50 pounds.
- An essential employee required to be on-call 24 hours for any emergencies.
- Must be available to work weekends and evenings as necessary
Minimum Qualifications
- Pass Commission medical examination.
- 17 years of age.
