Description
Under the Department of Parks & Recreation, the Maintenance & Development Division (M&D) is the largest division in Parks & Recreation. We provide high quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all of the parks and recreation facilities within Prince George’s County. We have six major work areas: Fleet Management, Buildings & Structures (Trade Shops), Horticulture & Forestry, Major Maintenance & Inspection, Critical Projects (Aquatics, Heavy Equipment/Roads and Grounds and Sustainability), and the Administration section.
This position is located in the Trails/Roads and Grounds unit of the Heavy Equipment Section which provides Excavation and Construction throughout the park system. This position is responsible for managing a crew to perform various types of grading and excavation projects including: demolition, storm water system repairs/installation, building parking lots and trails and renovating athletic fields. In coordination with other shops, maintenance yards, Commission contractors and government agencies, this unit will coordinate or implement projects in snow removal, material transport and more.
As Trails Construction & Maintenance Coordinator I, you will supervise a team of park general maintenance workers to: install/repair or relocate storm water pipes; install/build large scale parking lots, trails along with asphalt & concrete repairs as needed; repair/renovate athletic fields; excavate large scale de-watering/sediment ponds; implement large scale recycling of soil/asphalt by screening and sifting the soil; oversee the daily maintenance/status of over 40 pieces of equipment (i.e. dump trucks, back hoes, excavators, loaders, bulldozers, tractor trailers and more) with other team managers and write up purchase orders for materials, equipment rentals, servicing, dump fees, and coordinate/implement snow removal activities throughout the county, working closely with county officials.
Flexibility and the ability to handle change is a must, along with the ability to prioritize and schedule projects with the proper equipment and supplies. Must be able to operate heavy equipment (see prior paragraph) and must be a trouble-shooter who can work independently and make effective “on the spot” decisions when necessary. The ability to read blue prints, site drawings and cut sheets is also a must. This individual will be able to manage the risks and dangers inherent in this type of work as well as training other team members/staff to implement correct safety protocol.
Working conditions:
Works in office and within geographical area (parks). May work evenings, weekends, and holidays as assigned, On-call to respond to emergencies as they arise.
SALARY ($53,675-$95,060)
You Must Have A CDL License or Be Able to Get One Within Six (6) Months
(Work Hours are 6:00 am – 2:45 pm)
Snow Removal Period (12/1 – 3/31) = 24 Hour On-Call Requirement
Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in park management/administration, outdoor recreation, natural sciences, or a related field and one year of park management experience that included supervision and leadership of a staff; or
2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
3. Valid driver's license.
4. Additionally, contingent upon area of assignment, some positions in this class may require:
a. Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements upon appointment, or the ability to acquire one within six months.
b. Maryland Department of Agriculture Pesticide Applicator's certification in the categories appropriate to the work assignment.
c. Certification by the National Playground Safety Institute.
