The Department of Parks & Recreation has the overall responsibility for planning, supervising, and coordinating all park/recreation facilities and services throughout Prince George’s County. The Northern Region Parks Division (NRPD) is one of three maintenance Divisions within this Department and is composed of eight major work programs: Fleet Management/Trades, Building Maintenance, Area Maintenance, Playgrounds, Trails, Athletic Field/Turf Management, Trash/Recycling/Waste Management, Program Support, and the administrative section. The mission of NRPD is to provide professional, high-quality maintenance and maintenance support services for all parks and recreation facilities and to support the diverse work programs of the Parks & Recreation Department in Prince George’s County and its customers.
Based in the Northern Regional Parks Division at the Fairland Maintenance Yard, this position leads, coordinates, and monitors the work of Mechanics, Trades Trainees, and Park/General Maintenance Workers performing highly complex mechanical tasks. Responsibilities include planning and executing both major and minor repairs on a wide range of vehicles and power equipment at Commission facilities, ensuring quality, safety, and efficiency. The incumbent collaborates with Trade Shop Supervisors and Inspectors for project oversight, tracks work progress and adjusts assignments as needed to uphold performance standards. Additional responsibilities include maintaining compliance with relevant regulations, project planning, and performing other duties as assigned.
(Work Hours are 5:45 am – 2:30 pm)
- Organize and schedule mechanical repair tasks by reviewing incoming requests, using maintenance software to create work orders, and planning preventive maintenance. Conduct test drives and utilize diagnostic equipment to identify mechanical issues, ensuring a safe, hazard-free work area.
- Guide Mechanics, Trades Trainees, and other maintenance staff throughout projects. Distribute tasks, track progress, and maintain quality standards, including performance evaluations, documentation, and development of improvement plans.
- Serve as a key contact for personnel matters, including staff scheduling, coaching, and disciplinary actions. Collaborate with upper management to ensure compliance with organizational policies and procedures and to address employee relations issues.
- Administrative duties such as reviewing work orders, and completing necessary documentation related to staffing, safety compliance, and project milestones.
- Prepare cost estimates and requisitions for parts, tools, and materials. Track expenses, resource usage, and project timelines to ensure prudent use of materials and timely project completion.
- Schedule and conduct routine inspections and minor repairs on various vehicles and equipment. Perform basic service tasks—such as oil changes, tire rotations, and brake adjustments—to keep fleet vehicles operational and in line with safety requirements.
- Handle advanced mechanical work, including rebuilding engines, transmissions, and hydraulic systems, as well as rewiring electronic and computer-based controls. Replace and repair vital components to maintain peak vehicle performance.
- Arrange and conduct emissions testing for assigned vehicles. Diagnose and repair emissions-related components to ensure vehicles meet applicable environmental standards.
- High School diploma or Certificate of General Educational Development (GED).
- Completion of an approved automotive/equipment mechanical apprentice program; or four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the maintenance and repair on automotive and/or heavy motor equipment.
- Four (4) years of experience at the journey level, including two (2) years of experience directing the activities of other skilled Automotive/Equipment Mechanics.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total eight (8) years.
- Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
- Pass Commission medical examination.

- ASE Master Certification
- Class “A” CDL
